Debian - clock timer configuration lost! The Solution!

this error in debian under VMware4:
probable hardware bug: clock timer configuration lost probably a VIA686a
probable hardware bug: restoring chip configuration

ToDo:
BootPrompt of the Install.CD - Hit F3, type bf24 , ENTER - works!

The above message is printed because of a Linux kernel bug; Linux is
mistaken about the way the timer hardware is supposed to work and
falsely reports a bug. The message occurs on real hardware too. The
best way to get rid of this message is to upgrade to a newer kernel.
Sorry, I don't remember exactly what kernel version it was fixed in, but
it was a long time ago.

This tip makes no sense to me whatever.

Oh, I see. I went to the German site and read the tip (ich kann ein
bißchen Deutsch), and it explains there that the way to fix the problem
is to use a 2.4 kernel. That makes sense.

I gather the cryptic instructions below about typing bf24 are the way
you get a 2.4 kernel on some version of Debian that is so old that it
defaults to a 2.2 kernel. I'm not a Debian user, so I didn't recognize
that. :-)
