WFT? Mail.app is typing double characters!

All of sudden today Mail.app started doubling virtually all
non-alphanumeric characters, including spaces. When one of these chars is
typed, it initially shows as just one, but then when any key is pressed
next, that single char becomes a double. And after a few lines of this
weirdness, the message window suddenly stops accepting input altogether.
Copy/pasting the content into a new window allows for input to (briefly)
resume, but the pasted content looks different from what was copied: sort
of like the contents of a key capture, i.e. typed *and* deleted chars
co-mingled.

This is really weird. Has anybody else experienced this? Why on earth
would it be happening?

Someone recently had this problem on a mailing list I'm on (I think - I
couldn't find the email, perhaps because all the characters were
doubled!). They reported back a couple of days later that they'd found
the solution on MacFixit (again, I think!). It was a conflict between
Panther and some sort of key macro/capture/helper app. I can't remember
the details, but check you third party apps, which run all the time.

This is a known problem with certain third-party spellcheckers. I have also
heard reports that it can happen with the built-in spellchecker as well under
certain circumstances.

If you have spellchecking turned on, try disabling it.

Thanks, that seems to have solved it. Strange that Mail.app's internal
spellchecking would screw up message composing so badly, but at least it's
an easy fix. Whew.

Actually, it breaks all Cocoa apps using spellchecking, not only
Mail.app. You should update your third-party spellcheckers (I use
CocoAspell and the author posted a fix on his website).

Mine typed double spaces between each word for about a week. Then all
the sudden it worked fine, and I have no idea why.
