Yes, it's a sad fact [1] that "At 840 square mile, Jacksonville
is the largest city by area in the lower 48 states. Tourists and
new residents are attracted to Jacksonville by the region's mild
climate and lush beauty. ... But Jacksonville is also a rapidly
growing city in one of the nation's fastest growing states,
and residents worry about preserving environmental resources
and quality of life."
How has this sad state of affairs come about? It could be a
symptom of global warming, or it could just be due to continental
drift. That's why I'm soliciting contributions toward my new
"Help stamp out continental drift" (HSOC) fund. I call upon each
of you who reads this to send me just one square mile of cash,
just one measly square mile per person, and if you all do that,
I'll find a solution to the problem.

True. Jacksonville is gigantic. In fact, one can drive into
it on various roads and see a sign announcing that one is
within the city limits -- and one's still in pine woods, with
little sign of what one would think of as a city.
Jacksonville's a nightmare to drive in. I'm under 100 miles
from it, but I rarely go there because the traffic is straight
out of nightmare.
Also, if Texas were converted to suburban-style tract housing,
four people to a house, average-size city lot for each house,
the whole population of the world could live there.
So, okay, okay, by those standards the world isn't overpopulated.
We know. Really, we've seen these before.
Me, I don't think that the 36-acre piece of disused farmland I
own is big enough for me. I want my own square mile, 640 acres,
one section, at least. Several sections, preferably. And no
goddam property taxes, please. I mean, with property taxes,
I'm just RENTING the land from the county, really.
I also want my own river, of course.

Why not go whole hog and have a mountain,
a few lakes, and a forest too?

I live on a river. It sorta bends placidly around that end of my place,
which is up high enough that I haven't had to worry about flooding. It's
nice to go up in the tree house and look out that way, serene and
peaceful.
I wanted to get electricity in the treehouse, but everybody thinks it's
a bad idea.

I may have told this story before. If so, I apologize.
A few years ago, when I worked at my previous job, I woke up one morning
after a good night's rest and before the alarm went off. I got up, had
a small breakfast, and went out to wait for the bus. It arrived on
time. I got to work refreshed and alert and feeling productive.
Then my alarm went off. I woke up, tired, and showered, then rushed out
to the bus. It was late and I got to work groggy and discombobulated.
Several people intercepted me before I got to my desk.
It was then that I realized that my dream life was the same as my
current life, but about 10% better. I found this intensely depressing
at the time.

The only way to solve the environmental problems is to
control population by stopping the practice of immunization!

No, we don't have to eliminate government, we just
have to minimize it!

Jacksonville:
Stinks. The pulp mills give the air an acid taste and probably contributes to
the city having the highest lung cancer rate in the US.
Isn't that big. What the town did was incorporate all of Duval county as its
own. Most of it is undeveloped pine tree lots.
Has a light rail system. It's downtown and elevated. It goes about 3 blocks if
it had anything to run on the tracks.
And speaking of Downtown, what a joke. If it weren't for the courthouse and the
bailbondsmen there'd be no downtown.
The one thing I might consider a plus to a city without culture is the Alexander
Breast Planetarium.
It's a good place for ex-wives.
