I went for a walk down Brick Lane yesterday, ostensibly to buy some spices,
but I was also looking out for Karhais and Tiffin Tins.
I got the spices that I wanted, black and yellow mustard seeds and poppy
seeds, I found a selection of Karhais, unfortunately they were all round
bottomed and wouldn't sit on my Halogen stove. I couldn't find a Tiffin Tin
though.
Anyway on the way back I passed one of those eateries that caters for the
local Bengali population and thought "what the heck..". In I went, got the
greatest Karhai Ghosht , pillaw rice and a couple of kebabs, then took them
back and stunk the office.
Yes people complained about the smell...but deep down I knew that they were
really jealous.
The curry I got was on a par with the Lahore in Commercial Road and I now
have a sneaking suspicion that I have located my new lunch time eatery, it
certainly beats the Japanese take-away in Leadenhall Market.

I don't know the name but it was half way up, doorway set at about 45
degrees to brick lane and opened onto the counter with a reasonably large
seating area at the back.
If it is any help I had just visited the Taj stores which is near the
Hanbury street end of Brick Lane and was walking up the same side of the
road towards Aldgate. I passed Saliques and one other similar style eatery
and this was the third one.
Big display of different breads and kebabs in the window and it had a
menu/price list on two A4 sheets of yellow and blue paper in the window. I
think the kebabs started at 75p...great value.

Now treat this as a treasure hunt and go find it.
I unfortunately cannot be there as I had a trip to the Dentist this morning
and upon arrival at Witham Station found there were no trains London bound
as the overhead lines were down at Bethnal Green.
So I have had to sit in the sun, walk the dog in the sun and come in for a
cold drink and a play on the computer.

you must mean 'sweet and spicy', one of the few authentic restaurants
on bricklane. Also worth a visit is gram bangla - which specialises in
bangladeshi fish dishes (also unassuming from the outside). Check out
Tayyabs in fieldgate st. by the hospital for one of the best pakistani
restaurants in the area.

OK on my gas - any nice serviceable, heavy cast-iron ones? (Wonder what
the postage/carriage would be).

If you would please Steve, the carriage won't cost as much as petrol to
Rusholme (and Jones' weekends are taken up with steam rallies and his tractor;
don't fancy investigating Rusholme on my own, haven't been there since the
1960s).

Don't bother mate. All the Indians have been taken over by Bangladeshi's.
I only found this out when I asked the guy at my local Indian if he knew why
Rusholme had become so poor.
'Sheer Kaan' is supposedly still quite good.
Apparently, the best Indian in Manchester centre is one called 'Spice' and
its near the gay village somewhere.

Most of the Indian restaurants across the country have been run by
Bangladeshis now for a lot of years.
Brick Lane and it's surrounding areas such as Spitalfields have jointly been
known as Banglatown for some time.
Bangladesh was formerly East Pakistan but gained its independence in 1971,
and as we all know Pakistan was once part of India. I am sure there are good
Indian restaurants and bad restaurants run by Indians as there are good
restaurants and bad restaurants run by Bangladeshis.
Personally I tend to opt for the eateries that serve any local Asian
population, these are greatly different from the usual high street curry
house.

Are "Indian" restaurants run by Bangladeshis necessarily going to be any
worse than those run by Indians, or could the guy at your local Indian
(presumably himself an Indian) be a little biased? I believe that the
majority of Indian restaurants in the UK are actually run by
Bangladeshis, and that this has been the case for quite a long time.

Medium (12" - 13" diam and fairly steep sided) and a tava as well please?

I really don't know but my last four or five trips to Rusholme seem to back
up his theory. He also gave me a list of [Indian] restaurants i should try
and to be fair to him, they have all been superb.

Try to avoid Sunday afternoons - impossible to park and very stressful.
Other than that, it's OK. Not a lot of shops that sell kitchen stuff though
(I can only think of one) - Bradford is better.

I almost always gravitate to Shere Khan when I'm in Rusholme, because
I've been disappointed with the curries from the other restaurants
I've tried there.

Shere Khan is expanding now, too. They have a restaurant in the
Trafford Centre, with a charcoal grill (is that a first for this
country?), and I see they are opening up a stall in the food court at
Meadowhell, too.

They also sell their curry sauces in jars - I could buy them in two of
my local supermarkets, but don't. I prefer to make my own.

Regards

Mike

This is certainly true where I live, in West Yorkshire. The down side
of this is that I'm getting somewhat tired of the monotony. I can get
very good Pakistani curries here, but I sometimes crave a change.

That involved a three hour round trip to Lancashire for some _Indian_
food yesterday, for instance.

Shere Khan do very nice food. They also have a restaurant in Chester
(opposite Habitat).

I'll have to have a gander at the one in the Trafford Centre when i'm in
that neck of the woods :)

Haven't had a curry in Chester for ages - trying to remember where Habitat
is ('cos I don't go to Chester very often, not my favourite shopping place
but it's quite handy to stop for a meal on the way home from a rally etc.)
