Brother, if it helps any, I hear that UT students are joing in
with A&M students to finish building the bonfire.

Same here. I saw the story on CNN, they flashed the longhorn logo and the

My grandma was one of the first coeds ever admitted to A&M. My mom went to UT.
They are us. This was a great tragedy for sure. Seems especially tragic 'cause
they died doing something so - I dunno- optional? frivolous? relatively
unimportant? They were kids at play.
I'm sorry too. Things like this remind us what a crapshoot life can be. Roll
7's and you get to go surfing tomorrow. Roll snake-eyes and you're in a box.
Maybe everyone standing within 10 feet of you too.
Life is for the living. Hug your kids tight and be sure to look both ways

I was thinkn the same thing...why in hell does this thing need to be 40ft high?
Wouldn't ya say maybe a hundred logs would do, no they have to burn 7,000 logs.

: I was thinkn the same thing...why in hell does this thing need to be 40ft high?
Hell...40ft was how high it was when it collapsed; It was
supposed to be 55ft or something like that when done.
My comments: Yes, tragedy. Even moreso in that, in the whole scheme
of things, it was over something relatively trivial, tradition
or not. However, I *do* understand that traditions can be strong
and take on a life of their own where they appear to be *not* so trivial.
For this reason, I'm sure the bonfire thing will continue in the future,
but you can bet there will be some serious modifications to ensure
safety.

A 40' bonfire sounds like a fun time to me. It's been their tradition since
the 1920's.
They were all young college kids, willing to take risks. Don't tell us you
never took risks before you knew "what the fuck" you were doing.
I was watching the National news last night and they where
talking about the problems that Hurricane Lenny is stirring up.
It appears that the Coast Guard is completely overwhelmed
with the number of boaters in distress calling in for help.
They told the story of two US boaters who radioed in to the
Coast Guard Station with an SOS call.
It appears that the boat was going down, the Coast Guard did
not have time to find this boat and rescue the two sailors.
So, The sailors realized that they where going to have to abandon
ship, which would inevitably result in their drowning.
The two sailors radioed the coast guard and told them that they
would be abandoning ship momentarily , then they where patched
through to the telephone so that they could say "good bye" to their wives.
Can you imagine being on either end of that phone call? Truly a sad thing.

That is correct. Texans are not the sharpest knives in the
drawer, therfore, we Texans are putting the following on the
market for sale in hopes that a smarter state will take control:
Austin, Texas - second largest high tech area in the nation.
Houston, Medical Center - largest medical center in the world.
Compaq Computers - largest computer maker in the world.
Dell Computers - second largest computer maker in the world.
NASA's Johnson Space Center
Hmmmm... seems Texas has a few doctors and engineers. Who would

Yeah, but they'd been doing that exact same thing at that school for
like 90 years or so, and thought they had it down. And those students
felled all the trees themselves, and helped get 'em stacked like that.
It's just a f*cked accident, is all I can figure.

We surf, we play on the ocean. Getting thrashed around is part of it, but
for many really getting hurt or dying doesn't seem like part of the

I'm from Texas as well, sort of. My family lived in Temple. I was born in
Glendale, CA, on a family trip to Los Angeles, and went home after a week. I
don't know if that makes me a Texan or a fruitcake, but there it is. I do have
an autographed copy of Armadillos And Old Lace, however. I am often amazed
that there is anyone left in Texas. It seems like they've all come to
California. I only surfed around Houston, which is a very bad idea-smells too
wierd. That may be part of the reason. Of course, it may just be Ann Richards.
About the accident-for years, it has struck me as an unexcusable waste of
trees-not the sort of thing I could get into myself, and the danger signs have
shown up repeatedly over the years. It's unspeakably tragic nonetheless. Peace
to the victims' families.
I've met tennesseeans who'd smack you for suggesting the King would return to
California of all places-these people can be pretty serious.

Not necessarily true that it doesn't hit home with anyone else but
Texas, but that does bring up a valid point that I think everyone
should think about. I'm not saying this specifically to you, surfgeo,
but since you have reacted the most passionately to this situation,
this may be a good example for the comments I have:
It's interesting how when a tragedy strikes close to home, the
people affected are so passionate and intolerant in regards to
anyone "making light" of the situation; Sometimes even to the point
of threatening bodily harm (if not death) to the people making
insensitive comments. Yet, for similar, and often worse, tragedies
happening elsewhere, those same passionate people are strangely
silent, or even worse, become part of the "making light" crowd.
Is the loss of a Texas A&M student more tragic than a homeless
person being decapitated? Is the loss of a Columbine student
more tragic than a child being executed in Kosovo? Are there
lives that are more precious than others? I think not. So, if
you are going to be enraged by a tragedy, and even more enraged
by people making light of it, you should be prepared and willing
to do that for *every* loss of life. If you are not prepared
or willing to do that, then you should expect and not be surprised
when people make light of a tragedy that hits close to home.
Additionally, when people "make light" of something, I don't think
they sincerely mean to be insensitive; I think it's more of a
defense mechanism. Death and tragedy is not something most people
like dealing with, and either don't want to face the reality of it, or
they try to mask their true feelings of loss and or fear. For some,
I think the way to do this is to make light of the situation. I think
most agree laughter and humor is preferred over depression and death.
Finally, someone who may have been "making light" of the situation,
also said, "life goes on." This is very true. While the Texas thing
was certainly a tragedy, and while there are dozens more "tragedies"
going on somewhere, life *does* go on. I think most, in there own way,
pay their respects and reflections about a tragedy, then try to move
on as best we can. Attempts at humor may often be a part of that.
So, while that may be especially painful to bear when the tragedy
affects you the most, remember that the silence or jokes about
a loss somewhere else "not in my backyard" pains someone else just
as much. That's the way life is.....and yet, Life goes on.
Peace and comfort to *all* who have been affected by a loss.
Later,
Steve

Final thought on Texas, from the hospital where a
survivor spoke in his private room. "Hell, we were
having a ball. Don't worry we'll be back next year
to rebuild."

Thanks for reminding me Lemming. WTF was I thinking.
What did you think of GOP plans to give states and local districts more
flexibility in how they spend federal money? Surfgeo, you first...

Take your hand off your tiny little monkey
and take a cold shower. You've been
masturbating wayyyyyyy to much lately. It's
starting to affect your thought processes.
This coming from an old burnt out cross-dressing-real-doll
john hustling hooker from the PNW.
When are we going to see a picture of you actually riding a
wave? We've seen pictures of you cross-dressing, but no
pictures of you riding waves.

Um, minor point here JB but how are you calculating "largest?" By
revenues, the largest computer companes in the US are as follows
according to http://www.pathfinder.com/fortune/fortune500/index.html
(excludes "semiconductor" companies):
IBM $81.667 billion Armonk, NY
HP $47.061 billion Palo Alto, CA.
Compaq $31.169 billion
Xerox $20.019 billion
Dell $18.243 billion
And that's just in the US. If you want to talk Global we should
probably add Siemens, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, and NEC to the
list, all above Compaq.

i heard somewhere acid was making a comeback, now its verified. can you send
some my way? maybe then i can understand your hallucinatory fascinations, they
are very intriguing. :-)
lemming, my friend, you are in extreme denial, or else you are reverse
trolling, which is basically the same thing.
yawn. i am going surfing, sit there and wank at your terminal.
Question: In trying to balance surfing, work and writing in this group
with life, in what order do the activities get scrapped?
Answer:
1) AS
2) Work
3) Life
4) Surfing
- Carson (still day dreaming about the near DOH Cliffs waves from last
Sat)
