Amiga Mosaic & WWW Frequently Asked Questions

1: What is Mosaic?

Mosaic is a client for the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web is a new
application on the Internet which allows pictures, sounds, animations to
be viewed from anywhere on the Internet. Amiga Mosaic (AMosaic) is
available from Aminet <ftp://aminet/comm/net/Mosaic1.2.1_AmiTCP.lha> and
the Amiga Mosaic site. <ftp://ftp.omnipresence.com/pub/amiga/amosaic>

Mosaic can also be used to access FTP servers from a GUI front end, and to
access Gopher and many other services. The next release of Mosaic will
even allow you to connect to telnet services listed on WWW pages.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

2: What version of AmigaOS do I need?

AMosaic version 1.2 works with 2.x Amigas. You need AmigaOS 3.x to view
inlined images. Other versions (including 1.2.1) work only on AmigaOS 3.x.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

3: Why does Amiga Mosaic not do inlined images in AmigaOS 2.x?

AMosaic uses 3.x's DataTypes system to display inlined images.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

4: What networking software do I need?

There are versions of AMosaic 1.2 for use with any of DNET, AmiTCP 3.0b2,
or AS225r2. Software derived from those two TCP/IP stacks or emulating it
can also be used. Later versions should all be available for either AmiTCP
3.0b2 or AS225r2.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

5: Amiga Mosaic keeps saying "failed to create application" when I try to
start it. Why?

Because you don't have MUI installed, or don't have a recent enough
version for Amiga Mosaic. Install the latest version.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

6: Why does AMosaic require MUI? I hate MUI!

We like MUI. It made creating AMosaic much easier for us.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

7: AMosaic crashes when I iconify it, or change the preferences using MUI
Prefs.

This is fixed in Amiga Mosaic 1.4 and later. If you can't run those
versions, then don't do that.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

8: Why doesn't Amiga Mosaic display external images?

Could be any number of reasons. First, make sure that you have an
env:mosaic/mailcap file. Next, make sure that there is an entry in it for
the type you are trying to display. Finallly, make sure that that entry
has a %s in the command.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

9: How do I use forms with Amiga Mosaic?

You have to use version 1.4 beta or later.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

10: How do I have Amiga Mosaic use a proxy server?

Set the environment variable for the protocol to the appropriate proxy.
For example, to cause HTTP request to go to www.hut.fi:8001, set
HTTP_PROXY to http://www.hut.fi:8001/. This only works with Amiga Mosaic
1.3 and above; previous versions use an obsolete proxy protocol.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

11: Why doesn't the NO_PROXY variable work?

Because it isn't implemented yet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

12: I just get a window popped open on my screen when I tried to play at
an external sound/view an external image:
Title=AmiTCP:bin
Please send email to witb...@cs.cmu.edu
telling him that you passed through the unsupported
pipe code and which URL it happened on. Also say:
file HTFWriter.c:HTSaveAndExecute line 461 compiled Jun 14 1994 20:07:49

The problem is that you removed the %s from the line handling audio in
your mailcap file. Amosaic is trying to pipe the audio to your player, but
it can't. You need to fix your mailcap file.

This answer applies to non-audio data too, and to versions of mosaic more
recent than 1.3. As a side note, hours of fun can be had by turning up the
speakers loud and playing that URL with a cat in the room.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

13: How do I get Mosaic to open on it's own screen?

For MUI 2,3, run the MUI application, and take the following steps in it:

1) Make sure you are on the "System" page.

2) Change application selector from "«Global»" to "AmigaMosaic".

3) Use the screen selector to create a new public screen for Mosaic.

4) Edit it as appropriate.

5) Exit MUI with the Save button.

You may need to run and exit Amiga Mosaic before you can select it in the
application selector.

For MUI 3.1, start with the MUI application, doing the folllowing:

1) Go to the "Windows" page.

2) Click on the button closest to the "Gadgets:" label in the "Window
Control" frame.

3) Save this

Now, run Amiga Mosaic (or find it's window if it was running), and notice
that there's a gadget that looks like the one you just enabled in the MUI
application. Click on it, then click on the "Settings" item in the
resulting menu. It brings up what looks like the MUI preferences editor.
In that, do the following:

1) Go to the "System" page.

2) Click the "Call Inspector" button in the "Public Screen" frame.

3) Set up the screen you want Amiga Mosaic to run on in the resulting
requester, then save it.

4) Now, use the screen selector to select that screen.

5) Save the results.

Amiga Mosaic should move to that screen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

14: Is there going to be a commercial version of AMosaic?

Almost certainly not. AMosaic is a port of NCSA X Mosaic, and the right to
sell it commercially requires a rather expensive license.

However, at least three different Amiga GUI web browsers are being written
from scratch. The group that did Amiga Mosaic is working on one of them,
and it will be commercial.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

15: Is the source to Amiga Mosaic available?

Yes, from the Omnipresence FTP server
<ftp://www.omnipresence.com/pub/amiga/mosaic/MosaicSrc.lha>.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

16: How do I subscribe to the AMosaic mailing list?

Send the message "subscribe amosaic" to the address
"majo...@omnipresence.com". Or, if you'd prefer to subscribe to the
digest version and get one combined message per night, send the message
"subscribe amosaic-digest" to the same address.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

17: Are there any other web browsers for the Amiga?

There are a number of other web browsers available. See the amiga browsers
page <http://www.phone.net/home/mwm/amiga-browsers.html> for a current
list.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

18: What other references might be useful?

[Authors note: I'm including both commercial and non-commercial
references, along with how to find either them or more information. This
is not an endorsement, merely a pointer to more information.]

For a general discussion of AmiTCP issues, including application lists and
help getting started, see the AmiTCP FAQ.
<http://www.phone.net/ATCPFAQ/amitcp.html>

Multilink (normally MLink) functions somewhat like TIA, but uses it's own
protocol with replacement stacks, with source available for the Unix end.
If you're considering TIA, you might want to look at the Multilink support
page. <http://www.hut.fi/~oahvenla/MLink/>

19: Can I set up a World Wide Web Server with AmiTCP?

Yes. You can find a copy of the Amiga Web Server (AWS) on the AWS site.
<ftp://ftp.omnipresence.com/pub/amiga/aws/>

The other Amiga-native WWW server is awebserver, available from aminet.

If you prefer the NCSA http daemon, Graham Walter did an excellent port.
It is available from the Amiga Mosaic site.
<ftp://ftp.omnipresence.com/pub/amiga/amosaic/httpd.lha>

A more recent port of Apache - derived from the NCSA httpd - is also
available from Aminet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

20: How do I keep inetd from saying that httpd is looping?

Inetd assumes that nobody would want to connect to a service more than 10
times a minute. For AmiTCP 3.0b2, this is hardwired into the code, and
cannot be changed without source. You can ftp a patched version of inetd
for AmiTCP 3.0b2. <ftp://ftp.phone.net/pub/mwm/inetd_for_httpd> For AmiTCP
4.1 and later, you can use the TOOMANY option on inetd to change this from
the default value of 60 connections/minute.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

21: What do I need to know about this document?

That the latest version can be found on the world wide web.
<http://www.phone.net/ATCPFAQ/amosaic.html>

That any changes, corrections or updates should be sent to me
<mailto:amosa...@contessa.phone.net> and I will do my best to answer
them.

So if it hasn't been modified in this long...why the hell are you still
posting it? From what I heard, you simply ignore replies to stop the
postings....so here goes... :)

Why did you have to repost the whole article? contessa.phone.net

Sometimes I wonder if this guy isn't a plant from MS just to
irritate the heck out of us remaining Amiga users and get us to switch to
another system just to be rid of this jerk's 500 year old SPAM FAQ! Has
anyone actually seen him post a "regular" message in the past few YEARS?
Do you think he even still owns an Amiga? I once politely sent him a
private e-mail (having to avoid a spam filter; pretty darn ironic, eh,
considering his FAQ is indeed SPAM at this point) asking him to either
stop this FAQ or only post the URL where its kept, not the actual FAQ
itself. Like others have mentioned, he completely ignored it. Instead of
doing the Amiga a service, he's simply wasting our time, bandwidth, and
money by repeatedly spamming this newsgroup with a FAQ that was outdated
YEARS ago. I would be SHOCKED if there was even ONE person on the earth
still using Amiga Mosaic!!!

Is there no way we can force his ISP to take action against what
is clearly SPAM at this point? If this were Fidonet, his entire system
would have been dropped years ago. Is there nothing one can do on Usenet?
This isn't just a single SPAM, this is a bi-weekly thing with a really
long post(s)!

Because it wouldn't have made sense to make fun of it by leaving out
entire sections. If you read it through with any kind of sense of humor,
you wouldn't have had a problem with it.

Nope. He is (was?) an ok guy. Haven't seen him around on Usenet or the
mailing lists in a few years, though. His posts are obviously automated
and I bet he doesn't even know they are happening. Maybe he's dead?

(Great idea for a Twilight Zone episode or something... a guy dies, but his
computer keeps autoposting the same message to usenet for years. People
start flaming him and venting their bile back at the computer. The hate
and irritation builds up on the hard disk, raising the dead spirit of the
computer owner, who must do battle with his computer, while in incorporeal
form. But when he tries to break in, Sark and the Master Control Program
try to stop hi-- oops, never mind.)

No, he isn't. Mike doesn't own MS software. Currently he is programming on
FreeBSD systems.

Yes, I have. In fact, I exchanged email with him as recently as last week.

Be shocked. I still use it, from time to time.

No. He is his own ISP.

And regardless, even if I were to consider it spam (which I don't), four
postings a month is laughable, when there are newsgroups with hundreds of
spam postings a day.

That is kinda surprising to me. I've noticed that almost every one I see on the

well over a year ago now.

I had figured that one out when trying to get in contact with him. :-(

The problem is it is a severe waste of bandwidth. The messages typically are
multi-kilobyte in length, which means LOTS of people are forced to download it
BEFORE they know what it is (like me). Now, I don't have to pay for my
connections/phonecalls by the minute, but there are a LOT of people that do.
THAT is why most people in here are considering it spam and have been trying to
get it stopped/changed for a LONG time now.

BTW, I also do my best to work on the rest of the spam that shows up in the
groups as well. I have found from experience that the majority of them are near
untraceable for me, since I don't really have a lot of time to spend on it. I
do send off complaints when I can, but even then they majority of them become
untraceable in the time I have to work on it.

Please, either tell us how to get hold of Mike Meyer, or tell him your self. I
would be happy if he just changed it so it was a short message with a link
(FTP/HTTP/whatever) to the full message. The message already says where you can
get the full FAQ anyways. Why not leave off the rest of it to reduce wasted
bandwidth for an OUTDATED FAQ? This goes for the AmiTCP FAQ as well. I see
maybe 10% of the users I communicate with on a regular basis using it. Most use
Miami.

By USC Title 47, Sec.227(a)(2)(B), Sec.227(b)(1)(C),
and Sec.227(b)(3)(C), a computer/modem/printer is a fax machine,
to which it is unlawful to send any unsolicited advertisement,
punishable by action to recover actual monetary loss, or $500,
whichever is #greater#, for #each# violation.

I can't make him respond to you. His email address works today as it has for
many years....

It has a very small footprint compared to "modern" browsers and I'm familiar
enough with the source code (hello! which other Amiga browser gives you
source?) to make some custom changes that I wanted. Does it do frames? No.
Does it do forms? Yes.

Daniel == "pot"
Mike == "kettle"

If the above is the law, then what you've said is extraneous. If it isn't
the law, then it's useless. Regardless, it's a severe waste of bandwidth.
Which is worse? A single message that may be a waste, or dozens of messages
in which you have to separate the wheat from the chaff?

I know there are still people out there using UUCP and paying per second of
transfer time. They are very few, at least in the United States. 10 years
ago, it was a very big deal and I was right there with people who complained
about it. These days -- there are bigger things to worry about.

Sorry, but the States is only a very small part of the world. Most of
the world pays per second for downloads. I only _wish_ there were bigger
things to worry about than money.

Let's see, we have on offer:

- Pollution
- Wars
- Overpopulation
- Terrorism
- Diseases

and my personal favorite:

- Some dumbhead actually launching nukes due to the Y2K problem

(snip)

Well, I didn't need to! From another's suggestion, I contacted the MIT.edu
people that moderate the *.answers groups that it was also being posted to.
They set up to put a block on it from being posted to the answers groups, and he
was able to get in contact with Mike Meyer. He just told me in email (actually
yesterday, and then today confirmed) that Meyer has stopped posting it!

So, I guess I learned another way to get something like this done. :-)
