I have recently encountered a reference to a contest in which the object
was to construct a predictive model of a chaotically unstable laser
system. The model was to be developed from 1000 samples of published data
and then was tested against the next 100 samples which were not published.
I would like information on the results of this competition and access to
the data, if available. Thanks in advance for your help.

Check out:

and/or send mail to wei...@cs.colorado.edu.

P.S. That competition also involved a "data set" that was a Bach
fugue.

Sounds like a reference to the Santa Fe Time Series prediction contest.
As I understand it, there were various different sets of data to be predicted,
including the laser data you mention. The best place to find out about it
is:
Weigend & Gershenfeld
"Time Series Predictions: Forecasting the Future and Understanding the Past"
ISBN 0201626020
Published by Addison-Wesley, in the Studies in Complexity series.
I have been told, however, that this book is in between printings at the
moment (I've been after my own copy for a while now).

Hope you find what you're after,

Concerning instability of laser action why would you not read:
- J. Chem. Phys. 79 (1983) 727-735 : Thermodynamic approach for laser
action and (vibrational) multiphoton excitation (by X. de Hemptinne)
and
- Phys. Rep 122 (1985) 1-56 : Thermodynamics of Laser systems (same
author)
and references cited therein.
