a Gateway Handbook 486 ?
It looks like a great machine. But no reviews ?
Any other contenders in the < 3lbs sub-notebook catagory ? I know about
the Quaderno 386 and the HP Omnibook. Wasn't IBM coming out with such a machine ?

IBM's subnotebook is the ThinkPad 500, but it's not quite in that weight
category--it's just under four pounds. Every review I've seen so far the
reviewer has fallen in love with it. I have one on order. Anyone got one
yet?

I have not yet tried the new 486 Gateway Handbook, but boy, do I like
what I see! I think it looks like a great little machine. It's
_ALMOST_ what I would consider to be the ideal subnotebook. Looking
at how far the Handbook has come, I am going to hold out a little
longer until it _IS_ (or someone has a machine that _IS_) the ideal
subnotebook.
If they would put a little more into the Handbook it would be perfect.
I would like to see, for starters, a color screen. This, I don't
think would be too dificult to achieve. Two PCMCIA slots (2 type
II's, that doubles a 1 type III) would be a big plus. A VGA AND
KEYBOARD PORT! I know, there's probably no room for them, buy come
on, there's got to be a way! I like the DX2/40 in it. How about an
SL/25, SL/33 or DX50 (DX2/66)--I know, I know, I'm pushin' it. And
finally, EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE! THIS IS A MUST! (for me) I am sick
of portables burning out after a couple of hours. Go ahead, add an
extra half-pound and 1/2 inch to its dimensions! I'd rather carry
around a 3.5lb (or even 4lb) machine that lasts for 6 hours or more
(at least a week in suspend) than a 3lb machine that runs for 2 or 3
hours and then dies.
This would be ideal, to me. I know, I'll keep dreaming...but someday
someone will have it all. Of course by then we'll all be screaming
for a Pentium in our notebook instead of a whimpy 486!

If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing, there's one thing that really
bothers me about the Handbook. It looks to me like they're putting a
640x480 display into the same dimensions as the old Handbook display,
which was 640x400. That means the image will be squashed. The picture
in the ad seems to confirm this.
For that matter, I think the old display was a bit squashed, but that's
a lot easier to take in text mode. Graphical interfaces usually look nicer
with square pixels.
