Congratulations. You just violated Federal law. You might want to
check into laws regarding remarks about killing public officials,
particularly Presidents.

You better hope that all the conspiracy theorists that claim that NSA
and such monitor the net are wrong.

You know, somebody on alt.society.revolution had a visit from the Secret
Service after comments similiar to this were posted on the net. Maybe
it's time to have Big Daddy undergo some serious probing of what little is
left of his mind.

And people maintain we don't live in a police state. Ha!

Of course, I'd rather live in /this/ police state than any others around
the globe I've heard tell of, but it still makes you think . . .

I doubt that they are wrong. One minor point however, there is the outside
possibility that someone gained access to his account and decided to
post something that could result in big trouble for him - I have no clue
if this is the case but I find it unbelievable that anyone would be
so stupid as to threaten the life of the president in a public forum
such as this....

Seeing as how he's using an nyx. acct, I'm not sure HOW
easy it would be to track him down. Nyx seems to me, at
least to be VERY loosely regulated. He could have enter-
ed compltely bogus information about himself. They would
only have an IP address or a machine address to go on.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say that I have NEVER met
Pat Finerty. NEITHER do I want to kill Bush and place his head on a
pike in my front yard. NOR do I wish to mash Bush's testicles between
two bricks, pull out his fingernails with pliers, and shove a hot
poker up his rectum while I sing "Bess, You Is My Woman Now."

In fact, I ABSOLUTELY ABHOR the idea of plucking out Bush's eyeballs
and snipping off his nose with hedge clippers. I would NEVER consider
smearing him with grape jelly and tying him to a fire-ant hill.

Only a SICK, DERANGED person would string Bush up in a tree, and gut
him like a deer. No one in their RIGHT MIND would want to lower our
President slowly into a vat of concentrated nitric acid. I could
NEVER advocate any of these horrible things.

I just wanted to make it PERFECTLY CLEAR that I am an ordinary,
peaceful, law-abiding, God-fearing citizen with ABSOLUTELY NO VIOLENT
INTENTIONS WHATSOEVER. Thank you.

maybe they have a newsfeed, which they filter the incoming articles:

cat {new article} | grep $BIG_CHEESE | grep 'kill'

(If I knew more about newsfeeds, I'm sure I could be more technically
accurate)

Now with the defeat of Conservativism in the 90s, are we seeing the birht

Just a quick note since I'm sure you're all dying of curiosity.

I'm the sys.admin. of Nyx, from where the original posting emanated.
(For those who don't know, Nyx is a free public access system I run
at the U. of Denver, where I'm a prof in the math/cs dept. Anyone
can gain access, but we highly discourage aliases. See for yourself,
log in as 'new' to nyx.cs.du.edu/303-871-3324. I think of Nyx as a
sort of social experiment, to provide network access to those who
can't otherwise obtain it.) (Oh, and to avoid any "you fascist sys
admin comments", if you read the docs on-line on Nyx about it's history
and philosophy, I hope you'll feel I'm about as far from a fascist as
you'll find.)

Anyway -- without compromising anyone's privacy, I will say that I did
receive a call from a special agent of the Secret Service regarding the
posting. I provided him with the information the user gave publicly (our
enhanced "finger" type information), and he said they would be paying
him a visit. I did explain to him how people often lose inhibitions
when posting, that the net was often a pretty loose place, no guarantee it
was really him, etc. He seemed to agree with this, but said that they
needed to investigate all such threats, etc.

(For my part, I don't know they guy, I think what he said was really
stupid; and I grudgingly acknowledge that there are limits to free speech, and
that this type of language seems more in the "yelling fire in a crowded theater"
category than not. However (luckily for me I guess) I didn't have anything
but public information to reveal about the poster.)

As for how they found out, I have no idea, but my hunch is someone
on the net sent them a copy (rather than them monitoring everything).

I guess the moral is -- remember that postings are public and subject to
the same laws as what you might shout on a street corner.

Look on the bright side: we'll probably find out. I'd like to ask
pfin...@nyx.cs.du.edu to post daily from now on, until he disappears
without a trace. Please inform us of anything unusual, such as being
followed, or wierd interference on your phone that wasn't there before.

If your remarks were made in jest, the jocularity was lost, partly due to
the lack of verbal inflections / facial expressions inherent in this form
of communication, and partly because you are saying serious stuff. I wont
debate the issue of whether it is constitutionally protected speech or not,
but to advocate taking human life, whether of a president or of a sanitation
worker, is wrong, legal or not. If it was a joke, it wasn't funny. If you
are serious, you need to seek professional help.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty radical (see my .sig), but you stepped over
the line. I hope you don't get whisked off to room 101. (If you don't know
what room 101 is, read 1984, by George Orwell).

Well, as many people have pointed out, this is probably not a wise thing to
say. It is also inaccurate.

The poster, when talking about killing our nation's top leaders, incorrectly
lists the line of succession to the presidency. It should be Bush, Quayle,
Foley (speaker of the house) and then President Pro Tempore of the Senate, NOT
Secretary of State Baker. Baker would come after the President Pro Tem. of the
Senate, who I believe is Robert Byrd, but I could be wrong.

See the Constitution for more details.

1) Isn't it George Mitchell?

2) Baker is no longer Secretary of State anyway.

Mitchell is the Senate majority leader. Baker IS the Secretary of State. He
will be until on or soon after Jan. 20th (when Clinton names a new one).

OOPS! Let me correct myself (well, I had a little help actually) before this
gets out of hand. Baker isn't sec. of state. Probably everyone remembered
that he resigned except me. Please forgive my stupidity.
