What other differences are there besides 10X vs 8X, and 8mm vs Hi8????
It seems like TR71 has more features than TR81...is it worth it to pay
$100+ more for the TR81, other than the Hi8 feature???

I guess the question is is the picture quality really that much better
on a Hi8 than a 8mm format???

I thought so. My TV is not that great, but the picture quality is much better
using Hi-8 - if the number of dropouts are not too high.

I rented a TR81 for a day to do some testing. I had some dropout problems,
but the picture quality was enough better I decided to chance it that they
could be worked through.

Last night I bought one at Camera World's retail outlet. They are having a
sale. I got a TR81 with everything that comes in the box, a soft case, 2
additional 1 hour Hi 8 tapes and an extra Sony 2 hour battery for $959 or
$969. I can't remember exactly.

Hello all,

I just ordered Sony's '93 replacement for the MDP-333 LD player, the
MDP-455. Has anyone seen this player? Nobody in Baltmore seems to carry it. You
might be asking yourself, 'Why did he buy it if he hasn't even seen it?' Well
the answer is that I was so pleased with the 333's performance (a friend has
one) that I couldn't resist. If anyone is curious as to how much I got it for,
it was $379.00 + $15.00 S/H from Pennsylvania. I post the address if anyone is
interested. If you have seen this player, could you send me a brief summary
of the differences between it and the 333? All I heard is that it has better
noise reduction, but I'm not sure what that means in terms of digital data.

Thanks,
-P.M

I've had the 455 for a few weeks. I ordered it from Crutchfield. It's not in
their current catalog, but I gave them a call, just on the chance that they
might have it...Surprise! They did! The sales rep said it would be in their
next catalog. I don't own the 333, but some differences I know about are:
The 455 has NO "flip down" front on the disc drawer. Evidently, these were
notorious for breaking. The 455's drawer just slides out like a carousel CD
player. There is a Toslink optical digital output (which works great hooked up
to my Technics SAGX910 AV Receiver), there are 2 full sets of AV outputs, a
3-line digital comb filter, and some kind of "weird-sounding" (to me!) circuit
that is suppose to help compensate for video dropouts on discs. I'm not sure
how that works! There is a jog-shuttle on the machine and the remote, which
also can control a SONY TV (remote NOT programmable). I'm sure there are some
other differences I'm not aware of. How does it work??? GREAT!!! The audio
especially is Super.

The Sony 455 uses the UMATIC tape technology to
reproduce the picture on the tv. It is rated as the BEST
low end player in Japan.

When you get your MDP-455, can you post a message to this newsgroup concerning
how you like the MDP-455 picture enhancement modes. The MDP-455 has a
picture enhancement feature which toggles between SOFT, NORMAL, SHARP.
The MDP-455 also has a feature where the laserdisc player will mask out
imperfections in the video which are caused by laserdisc defects. I would
especially like to hear how effective this circuitry is. I would be great
if we no longer get those short white streaks, or those white spots etc.

FedCo in California has the MDP-333 for $389.97; I just saw the MDP-455
described in the new "Video" magazine (alas, I don't recall the features).
If you can get the new one for less money than the old one costs at a place
that discounts as well as FedCo, then it sounds to me like it's a good deal!
Maybe you'd consider posting that address? (-:

FedCo also carries the Panasonic LX-101 LD player; I'd be interested to hear
from anyone about this particular model, and any relevant comparisons to the
aforementioned Sony MDP-333 and/or MDP-455 models ...

BTW, just to tie a loose end together re: FedCo. I posted about FedCo about a
week ago, and yesterday I bought a brand-new still-in-the-box 1992 model (4/92)
Sony KV-32XBR51 television there (that's the one that's the top of the line
model for 1992 except that it doesn't have the Advanced Digital PIP functions
that the KV-32XBR55 model has). My cost was $1099 - which is the same price
that most a/v stores out here charge for the *basic* current-model KV-32TS20!
For the same price I got an XBR tube, SRS, speakers with Super Woofer, etc. ...
A great deal, methinks.

MDP-455 looks more "plain" than MDP-333. However, it's more
durable. I got it about three months ago, and had no problem with
it. The picture quality is somewhat better than MDP-333. MDP-455
is more resistant to scratched discs than MDP-333. Similar to MDP-
605, it has a picture enhancer, with settings STANDARD, SHARP, SOFT,
and DIRECT. Power button on MDP-455 is POWERED, so the player can
be turned off from the remote control. It now has two video output,
two S-VHS output, and digital audio output. Overall, it's a far
more capable player than MDP-333.
