new jargon?

I'd never heard them, but I like them. There are lots of local "clue"
metaphors here, ranging from the Clue Phone or the Clue Train to the
Clue-by-Four.

And just today I came upon "backward contemptible" in a comment about
an undocumented, deprecated flag in Berkeley man(1)....

Not bad. Of course, I like the following comment from Hal Abelson (of
MIT) about the new name for SunOS:

I see (from reading this august list) that Sun has chosen the name
"Solaris" for their new opeating system.

In Stanislaw Lem's novel of the same name, Solaris was an alien
planet/intelligence that human explorers found to be utterly
incomprehensible and psychologically devastating. Encounters with
Solaris drove them to madness and death.

I'm glad that someone at Sun is finally getting it right.

Having actually used Solaris I find this to be fairly accurate. Some
things therein pretty incomprehensible to be sure.

Thanks for the reference, I'm sure people around work will appreciate
it.

Just for another reference, the novel was made into a film by Russian
director Andrei Tarkovsky. Sci-fi meets pretty intense, introspective,
personal, strange, Russian, filmmaking. I liked it a lot (I like all
Tarkovsky's stuff); your mileage may vary. I also saw it at out local
video outlet, but it's not as good on TV (same as 2001 in that
respect).
