Slow play is caused by slow players regardless of their skill level. When I was
a child my father would take me golfing. He would hand me his 5-iron and say,
"I'll meet you on the green, don't be late." I would hack all the way to the
green, but I usually was waiting on him. I got real good at hitting the ball
walking into it.(ie. Gary Player's 3iron suggestion). After awhile I got real
good at hitting the 5-iron so my Dad bought me a set of kid's clubs. Slow play
just shouldn't be allowed by the course management. My friend and I can play 18
in 2hr45min. and that is our pace.

p.s. I hate it when I'm waiting for the group ahead to putt out and Isee the
pin come out, then go back in,then go come out.etc.etc. Sometimes I feel like
sending them a golf ball enema. :-) <- That's a smiley.

I'm just curious. I saw this post and was reminded of the fastest 18 I've
ever played. It was on a fairly easy muni here in St. Paul, MN called
Highland Park G.C. (6113 yds. Par 72. Slope 112?). We played on a saturday
morning in October when the temp was about 40 degrees (F) and the wind
blowing about 30 mph. Needless to say the course was empty (and closed)
but there were holes in the greens (no flags). Check this out - 2 hrs
and 12 min. by my watch which I checked as we walked off the firt tee
(might have been 2 and 15 min). Thats my record. Just to make it worse
I had one of my best rounds ever 86 with my 17 handy. My buddy shot
92 with his 12 (I think it was 'cause his hands got too cold).

May sound like crap, but we really did it. No way if anyone else had
been on the course. We did about the same thing the next year (1990)
with 3 of us and made it in 2 hrs. 25 min. This was a more precise
time because we were trying to beat the old record. It would be
fun to try under nicer conditions but the only way to get an empty
course in Minnesota is to wait 'till late (in the year).

Anybody else have any experiences like this to share?

Is it not true that Greg Norman and Mark O'meara once played a round
in a PGA tournamen in something like 1hr 45mins? My understanding is that
they were last in the field on the final day, and so tee'd off first. They
decided to enjot themselves, and see how quickly they could get around. For
the record, I think they still shot 75 and 77, or something like that.

There was an article on President Bush's recreational activities in last
week's Sports Illustrated (John Daly is on the cover). His golf game was one
of the things profiled. One of the things notable was that he plays with a
handicap of 11 and usually completes a round of 18 holes in 1 hr 30 minutes.
Bush's record for finishing 18 holes is 1 hr 25 minutes.
How would you like to play at that pace if you had the course to yourself?

Truman.

I was there. I was a course marshall when they did it. It was the
Nabisco in I think 1988 or 1989. The Nabisco Championships is the top
30 PGA money makers for the year. So it is only a 30 player field. Greg
and Mark were in last place so did tee off first. I was marshalling on
the 7th green and 8th tee that day. (A wonderful place ot marshall,
because the people are kept a few hundred yards away from the area.)
I start walking out to my area when I see everybody go running buy. Greg
and Mark hit there first tee shots and then just sprinted down the
fairways followed by caddys. The only ones that knew they were going to
do it was themselves and the caddies. All the officials weren't really
sure what to do. The scorekeeper was an older woman and the kid
that carried the score was an over weight kid. By the time they got to
7 it was really funny seeing everyone trying to keep up. They finally
got carts for the officials and rushed marshals out to their stations.
I don't remember the exact time. I had recently played a round of golf
in 2 hours and remember them shattering my best, so it was substantially
under 2 hours. And they did both break 80 which was also impressive.
Oh Yea, it was at Pebble Beach.

They both also beat the storm that came a little after they finished.

In the Australian Open a couple of years ago, the sent someone out on the
final day by himself (with a marker and official, of course). He was first off
and finished in just over an hour. And he shot a par round! The next group (a
2) finished over an hour behind him!!!!

My father and I played a par 71 course in 1 hour 30 minutes once. It was the
middle of summer, and the temperature had reached 40c (over 100F for those who
are uneducated :-) ). I shot 82 (8 under my handicap); he shot 90 (10 under!).
We only saw 3 other groups on the course.

I think the President _used_ to have a 10 or 11 handicap. If the
discreet clips shown on the news are any indicator, his swing has become
a little awkward. If he still shoots that well, he must have been
taking lessons from Chi-Chi Rodriguez (who is the most extraordinary
golfer with a _unique- swing).

I think his partners (Who's going to argue with the MAN) concede a lot
of "gimme" putts.

An average of 90 minutes translates to: 5 minutes per hole.
approx. 66 yards per minute

It would seem that the use of the obscene long-staffed putter (the
yip-doctor) might take at least a minute or two per hole just getting
it in and out of the bag.

If he can play 18 holes in 90 minutes and shoot under 85 without using a
cart and without conceded putts, I would be willing to:

- vote for him in the next election
- contribute to his campaign
- admit that John Sununu is a charmer
- praise the intelligence of Dan Quayle

Mythology is wonderful. It is also harmless, albeit silly.

I think Bush's handicap is that he grew up with a silver
spoon in his mouth and has absolutely no idea what it's
like for John Q Public trying to make a go of it today
in this US of A.

Sorry. I couldn't help myself.
I know it's wrong to inject politics into an otherwise
pleasant notes group, and ESPECIALLY to slam a Republican
in a golfing group :-)

(I do feel better now)

Not so.

He's got a REALLY ugly swing, and some learning yet to
do about race and race relations.
