Hi gang,
I'm oing a research paper on why 'adults' don't grow out
of reading comic books, and I'd love some input. No, I won't print your
name, or anyhting else that can identify you. THis is absolutely confidential.

Questions:
How old are you? (an age group will do if you're shy)
When did you start reading comics?
What was the first title you read? (if you can remember)
Briefly, what titles have you read since then?
What do you read now?
Approx how much do you spend on comics in a month?
What else do you read?
What do non comic reading friends think of your 'habit'?
Do you keep your reading secret from 'mundanes' because they won't
understand?

Please e-mail replies to:
w...@echo.canberra.edu.au

Thanx in advance I hope

Are you only polling 'adults' or will adults do? Is this a paper on
comics reading, or the effects of phrasing on surveys?

Is 'patronising' quite the right phrase for the intro paragraph?
Would condesending be closer?

> Questions:
> How old are you? (an age group will do if you're shy)

Born 18 March, 1961.
Died 14 Feb, 1978 (And, yes, I have paperwork to prove it).

> When did you start reading comics?

Age 4-10 (with a gap) and then again at 20.

> What was the first title you read? (if you can remember)

Probably 'You Will Go To The Moon', a UK comic (I think) about
space. Otherwise, Rupert (I think) or Andy Capp.

> Briefly, what titles have you read since then?

I run a store that sells comics. Let's just say 'most of them'.

> What do you read now?

See above.

> Approx how much do you spend on comics in a month?

None of your business.

> What else do you read?

One or two books a day, mostly fiction, but often some
science. The Economist, and other news sources. The Net.

> What do non comic reading friends think of your 'habit'?

Like most comic fans, I ritually sacrifice non-comicbook
readers to dark gods. Tragic, isn't it? Another mind wasted by purile
entertainment.

To be serious, I don't know. Under Canadian Law, adult
comicbook readers, having committed the sin of not judging a medium by
the products within it meant for children or teenagers, must ring a bell
as they walk, crying out 'Unclean! Unclean!' and that puts off most people.
That and the little squid they make us wear on all our clothes warns real
adults not to talk to us.

I sell comics. Keeping that a secret kinda defeats the
whole purpose of running a store. Oh, people sneer at me when I pass
(Especially since that TV show did the 'Comicbooks: Threat or Menace?'
series) and mothers hide their children when I enter a store, and *yes*
once the KKK burned a cross on my lawn, but on the whole, as long as I
stay in the 'Adult Comicbook Readers KZ', I'm let alone. No nasty trip
in the train with no exhaust pipe, and all I have to do is put up with
the occasional twerp who thinks comic-reading is like voting Reform,
something that should stasy in the closet where it belongs.

Well, now .... see how easy it is to post stuff to r.a.c. which is
relevant, interesting, and perhaps has a touch of comedy to it?
