I've noticed that in addition to Focus on the Family's _Plugged In_
reviews of movies, music and TV, they are now including short
summaries of Bible books:

BIBLE WATCH

Book: Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon); Old Testament

Author: Attributed to Solomon

Genre: Poetry

Summary by: Bob Walisouser and Bob Smithzewski

Pro-Social Content: What is the Song of Songs actually about? Is it
about ordinary romantic love, or is it an allegory? Some Bible
scholars say the song is symbolic of the love between God and the
nation of Israel, while others say it is symbolic of the love between
Christ and His bride, the Church. In any case, the majority of the
song is a dialogue between the "Beloved" (the woman) and her "Lover"
(the man). Fortunately, the depth of love that fueled the passion
between the Beloved and her Lover is sanctified through marriage ("on
the day of his wedding", Song of Songs 3:11). True, genuine love
expressed within the song appears to be the antidote to the chronic
depression felt by the writer of Ecclesiates, also attributed to
Solomon.

Objectionable Content: [Warning: Explicit Lyrics] Song of Songs begins
with kisses, love, perfumes, and a request to be taken to the king's
chamber -- and then it really begins to heat up. The first portion of
the song reads like an intimate romance conducted through a private
Internet chat room. Beloved and Lover praise each other with enticing
language. But these days, a woman might not be as happy to hear that
her hair is "like a flock of goats", her teeth "like a flock of
sheep", her neck "like a tower", or her breasts "like two fawns". It
contains even more explicit lyrics such as "I will climb the palm
tree; I will take hold of its fruit." (Song of Songs 7:8) and "Under
the apple tree I roused you" (Song of Songs 8:5). Fortunately the book
does not include any immodest photos.

Summary/Advisory: Song of Songs' biggest problem is its matter-of-fact
attitude toward sex . And knowing that King Solomon married several
foreign women who worshipped pagan deities makes even the romantic
passages ring hollow. Song of Songs is definitely off-limits for
casual dinner conversation between husband and wife, unless married
for a minimum of 7 years. Still, Song of Songs is a far cry from
acceptability.

David,

Thank you. One of the points made in "Hollywood Worldviews" by Brian Godawa
(ISBN 0-8308-2321-2, published by InterVarsity Press) is that the Bible
tells many stories about rape, murder and sex. This makes the standard of
some Christians, to stay away from R-rated movies, a non-Biblical standard.

The categorization of the Song as "off-limits" was done by Reformers who
did not like the possibility that sexual love was displayed with approval
in the Bible. Therefore, they thought, the Song "must" be about Christ and
His church. Whatever the case, why would you post a review that describes
the Song as "Song of Songs is a far cry from acceptability."?
