I read today in USA Today that Fox has sold Simpson's licensing
rights to Mattel Inc. to manufacture a line of Simpsons actionn figures
and playsets. I have one thing to say to Fox: You can't be serious.

Why do people feel the need to totally commercialize every single
new popular movie/show/person/product/etc. ? I love the Simpsons. I loved
Matt Groening's work before the Simpsons, and I have been following them
ever since their Tracy Ullman days. Now all of a sudden they are very pop-
ular, which is great. I have even seen their t-shirts, which is also great.
(I own two.) But do we have to go so far as to merchandise them to death?

This can be compared to the Batman thing last year. I liked Batman
when I was a kid, and thought that a Batman movie in the 90's would be a
cool idea. But after a while I saw Batstuff on every teenager everywhere.
It got really sickening, and even annoying before long. Enjoying something's
popularity is one thing, but there is such a thing a overkill. All I'm say-
ing is that I hope the world doesn't go overboard with the Simpsons. It
is dissapointing for those of us who appreciate something for what it is
to see people exploiting it just because it's "cool, man."

I will now step off of my soap box and return you to your regularly
scheduled news group.

Oh, by the way, is anyone as annoyed by BIFF and his SCREAMING as
I am? I think we should tell him to read the ettiquite entries. Or just
call his mother and tell her to take the PC away.

Perhaps Fox is just miffed that "Alien Nation" doesn't have the demographics
to launch a toy line ("Awwww, mom, I want the Sykes doll for Christmas!"),
so they have to use the Simpsons to catch up.

I'm dying to see what these action figures are actually like. Will Lisa
come equipped with her sax? Will there be a cute little Maggie doll that
sucks on her pacifier when you squeeze? Will Homer have all three hairs?

Well, until there's a Simpsons video-game for Nintendo, I think we're safe.

Oh, c'mon! Surely somebody likes BIFF. After all, why else would there
be a new newsgroup alt.fan.BIFF ? :-)

I'm serious; a week or two ago, alt.fan.BIFF appeared on my system. I
thought maybe it was someone from alt.tv.simpsons who did it. I haven't
seen any articles in it, though.

OK, 'fess up. Which of you netters created it?

Yeah, what makes you think it has anything to do with the Simpsons?

There is no BIFF on the show (were you thinking of Bart?).

BIFF is the net's current resident pest. Don't encourage him. (her? it?)
(Like I just did, too. :-) )

Meanwhile, thanks to all the netters who have posted Simpsons bitmaps!
How about one for Krusty or Sideshow Bob?

Yeah, well, I know this doesnn't belong here.. but just concerning BIFF, it's
worse if you know who he is, and how he posts with false addresses (which
I happen to know..., but don't expect to ever use)

Oh, and on the subject of the Simpsons, I have about 12 of a really great
T-Shirt that they designed up here for 'Simpson Mania'... any collectors who
want one.. just give me a yell... =)

Before I comment let me say that I understand where you're coming
from completely. I hate it when things get overcommercialized.
Howver I can't help thinking that:

1) Part of why we (me at least) hate overcommercialization is
we like to feel that we're the ones who really appreciate something
and everybody *else* is jumping on the bandwagon. I wouldn't mind
a Simpson shirt (if I could find one of just my heroine, Marge)
but all the other people couldn't possibly really appreciate them
like I do right? They just buy 'em cause they're cool.

2) Bart himself would JUMP at the chance to make money off of
his image - and if you'll remember the last scene of "Krusty the
Klown" he obviously has no problems with the overcommercialization
of Krusty (now there's some self-parody...) It is a little funny
to me to see people outraged at their hero being sold-out when
he would definately sell himself out if he could. Bart doing
commercials seems totally appropriate and Bart merchandise even
more so. I agree it'll be a shame if people just get sick of
the Simpsons because of all this stuff - but let's face it, us
true fans will still love it, right?
