My IBM T30 Thinkpad manual says to clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth
or a cloth moistened with a little water. I don't see how they expect to
get fingerprints off a screen with just water. Is there any other methods
to clean the LCD screen without damaging it?

Mark,

You can try cleaner spray and cleaning cloth that is designed for AR
(anti-reflective) coated lenses, such as for eyeglasses.

water works. i don't know how or understand why, but it does work. my
guess is I don't think oils stick very well to the surface of the lcd

I'll second the vote for eyeglass cleaner. The good stuff is meant for
coated lenses and is antistatic. Probably more important is the cloth you
use. I like to use a soft cotton cloth, even an old t-shirt. With the
right cloth, you can even use spit for a small spot. With the wrong cloth
you'll screw up the screen no matter what you use.
