Just to clarify, video on demand can be both paid or "free". By free,
I mean that there is programming there that is available with the
digital service that has no other cost associated with it. That is
what the Anime Network is. I can watch an episode of Samurai X and it
will not appear on my cable bill. I just wanted to clear up that
misconception because a few people here have made it.
When you call up the On Demand menu, the Anime Network shares a
category with Atom Television (the Atom Films digital offering) called
"Cutting Edge". When you go into anime, you are presented with a 4
choices: Martial Arts, Science Fiction, Comedy and Action.
Unfortunately, it seems that these are mislabeled at this time because
Evangelion is found under comedy and Golden Boy is under Science
Fiction.
The offerings are presented dubbed. There is an Anime Network bug in
the lower right corner of the screen and after the program is over, a
short "Anime Network" ID bumper with the channel website URL.
Here is what is under each category (presented as is...hopefully, they
will be corrected soon. I'd hate to have someone hate anime because
Gasaraki wasn't funny):
Martial Arts
Ninja Resurrection
Samurai X: Episodes 1 and 2
Tekken
Science Fiction
Golden Boy: Episodes 1 and 2
Comedy
DaiGuard: Episodes 1, 2 and 3
Evangelion: Episodes 1 and 2
Gasaraki: Episodes 1, 2 and 3
Nadesico: Episodes 1 and 2
Action
Gunsmith Cats: Episodes 1 and 2
Noir: Episodes 1 and 2
Orphen: Episodes 1, 2 and 3
Spriggan
Each episode that I have seen is as was presented on DVD (where
applicable). In fact, the Evangelion credits the French and Spanish
language versions as the DVD does. For some reason, the end theme to
Noir was not translated in episode 1. I'll do a check on episode 2. It
has a 2003 copyright, too. I'm seeing into the future.
Unless someone else watched before me, I wanna claim to be the first
watcher of the Network. (You hear that, ADV?) For the record, I
watched the first episode of Evangelion at around 12:30 yesterday.
What an eve of Christmas eve present.
I'm not sure when the episodes will rotate or when they'll add more
titles. I guess I can keep everyone posted if they're interested.
JoeC...again, it's not pay per view...

True, but baby steps. The marketplace has always had too many
channels for too few spots on channel lineups. Don't look for the
Anime Network to get analog carriage. If anything, it'll be a digital
netlet or "diginet". Not that that is a bad place to be. It's
considered too much of a niche to be anything but (see also AOL Time
Warner and Boomerang carriage)

Live anime? Forgive me if I proclaim that watching people sketch and
paint key frames for hours on end sounds *incredibly* boring... :P

You would think with ADV being in Houston they'd stick it on digital
cable or satelite there. Ah, what do I know.

What?
I'd do it. If I felt that a market was good enough to base my stupid
company in, you'd bet I'd be marketing my product there as well.
Okay, I just want to see anime for "free" on digital cable when I move
at the end of the week dammit. Not that SMJA, or .hack//SIGN or
Azumanga Daioh won't keep me buzy or anything, no not at all...
It is a Simpsons reference, a reference!!!!

Eh.
Must have been either an early season or a recent season reference
then.
No, it was about 4 or 5 years ago, 4 or 5!!!! *SHAKES FIST*
>No, it was about 4 or 5 years ago, 4 or 5!!!! *SHAKES FIST*
Well, that would be the other problem then. About 4 or 5 years ago I
used to work Sunday nights. Working Sunday nights = no watching the
Simpsons.
You could have taped it or caught the episode again in Syndication,
IN SYNDICATION!!!! *SHAKES FIST*
>You could have taped it or caught the episode again in Syndication,

Ah yes, syndication, the magical programming notion that an episode
you saw yesterday will be repeated yet again in two to three weeks.
I've had it happen quite a few times with the simpsons.
They have showed that one with the screaming catipillar 500
times already and it just first aired last year. Mmmm
repetition.

Now we have Pokemon on CN at the same time Simpsons is shown on FOX at
night so if it's a craptacular Simpsons episode (which since they'be
been showing the first couple of seasons lately, it usually is) I'll
just flip over to Pokemon instead.
