At first I decided that, of the three powerbooks, the 100 was almost within
reach, but wasn't powerful enough to Do Everything, the 140 was powerful
enough, but I couldn't justify the cost for what I would be doing, and the
170 is still absurdly out of the question. I didn't need one enough; I would
wait until the price/performance ratio drops more.
But in the last few days, my resolve has begun to weaken. Since the 100
has been so surprisingly unpopular compared to the 140 and 170, Apple will
probably discontinue it soon, and the new models will probably be in the
140-170 power and price ranges. It's price has become almost tolerable-
the street price for the 100 4/20 or 4/40 seems to be hovering around $1000.
And it's twice as fast as a Plus, which I'm still tolerating at work anyway.
Convince me that I'm wrong. Or, if you'd rather, convince me that I'm
making a fine decision. Opinions about the Powerbook 100...
(This purchase would be my money, not my employers, of course).

No , you are not wrong. It is the only notebook in the market (including
the PC market) that can does serious graphics, and desktop publishing and
have the lovely MAC OS (as opposed to dos+window) for a 1000.00 bucks.

Well my PC-laptop system cost admittedly $1400... but I can do serious
graphics. Have unix. Install an Xclient and run my lappy top off of
SLIP.
(this includes btw software costs and modem costs).

I don't want to get into a religious battle between OS stuff. But I
wanted to remove the cockyness on the part of MacUsers that I have been
seeing.
