Yes, there is almost a riot in the WinXP groups about this update (Q811493).
Too bad MS hasn't pulled it from Windows Update, they know about the problems
the update is causing, and the update is not a very critical one :(
Until the update is fixed, it should only have been available as a manual
download for those who absolutely wanted to install it. I am telling people to
keep away from it, and I am not going to install this fix on any computer I am
responsible for...
Also, it looks like this update is scheduled to be incorporated in SP4 (file
name Q811493_W2K_SP4_X86_EN.exe), I really hope they get it fixed before the
SP4 development is freezed (it is in beta now), or else I think SP4 will end up
on the no no list as well...
