I haven't had any new messages from this newsgroup for
quite a while and decided to try to investigate.

Here is the Xref: from the last message that I have in my cache:
Xref: tkmsftngp01 microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.setup:8261

Here is what my log shows when I try to connect to it:
NNTP: 22:20:33 [rx] 211 1979 1 30540 microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.setup

Here is what TelNet shows when I connect to it:
211 3111 1 8325 microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.setup

Clearly I'm missing some messages. (8261-8325)
But where did OE get the idea that I have number 30540
(or higher)? It doesn't even try to do an XOVER even though
I have switched my Synchronization settings to
All Messages. (Asking why the server is sending this
number is another matter.)

The only thing in my IE6.Setup.DBX that seems to have any
relation to that number is this cross-post:

Xref: tkmsftngp01 microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress:30540
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.setup:8181
Xref: tkmsftngp01 microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress:30540
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.setup:8181

(For some reason the same message appears twice.)

But that must have happened long before the newsgroup
quit working for me. (8181-8261)

There was no other sign of abnormal sequence numbers
associated with my cached messages.

Unfortunately I only turned my trace on after the problem
occurred so I didn't capture it. What I speculate could
have happened is that earlier OE did receive a similar
message and at that time did try to do an XOVER for
that range. Whether it worked or not is immaterial.
The problem is that as soon as OE poisons itself with
such a high false number it has no way to recover.
The user must resort to a Reset.
