The latest skinny on NBC's 'Joey'
And a wrapup on the new shows coming this fall
By Toni Fitzgerald

The most important pilot that NBC has ordered may be the first to
debut.

The network, which faces the very painful task of trying yet again
to find the next “Friends” for its fall lineup, already has guaranteed
a slot for the “Friends” spinoff “Joey” on its fall schedule.

But unlike most of the pilots being ordered the past two months,
you may see this one on the air before the end of this season.

The rumor is that NBC is fast-tracking “Joey” in time to premiere
during the May sweeps. Several sources confirmed to Media Life that
“Joey” could debut just two weeks after “Friends” ends its run on the
second Thursday of May sweeps.

The network apparently has nixed the backdoor pilot approach that
many shows use, such as the second-to-last “Gilmore Girls” episode
last year that introduced all the elements of a planned spinoff that
was later canned.

This way NBC would capitalize on the “Friends” mania sure to be in
high gear during sweeps and give “Joey,” which many media types are
skeptical about to begin with, a better chance of capturing an
audience next fall.

The network has not said anything on the record about the
speculation. “Friends” wrapped two weeks ago, and “Joey” is being cast
with filming to start in March.

Along with “Joey,” other sure things for the fall schedule include
more spinoffs from NBC’s “Law & Order,” though details remain sketchy,
and CBS’s “CSI.”

Getting some buzz already are the NBC remake of “The Office” and
ABC’s more daring “Doing It.”

They could pair him off with Roz from "Frasier" -- we know she likes 'em
young'n'hunky.

Unless it completely bombs in May, which is highly likely given the
recent quality of "Friends" episodes.

Seems unlikely. I think it got a full-season order in the negotiations.

It doesn't seem highly likely unless the entire staff including the writers
were retained from "Friends" to work on "Joey" which I'm sure is not the case.
Not that I have any high hopes for the show, but I'll tune in at least once.

I half expect them to decide to stick it on Tuesday nights in May --
oh, say around 8:00 Central. Grrrrrrrrrrr!!

I'm just a lurker -- but a devoted one. I just couldn't help myself.
Okay, that is all. Talk amongst yourselves ...

Oh boy, fast-tracking a show! That never fails!

Well, since this is the last season of Friends, I can understand why
they wouldn't want to waste an episode on a back-door pilot.

Not to mention that the Joey pilot is probably a lot cheaper than a
single episode of Friends. By making it a back-door they instantly
lower the high per-episode cost of the series.

Makes me wonder, though... how well will Matt LeBlanc be paid for
this? Is this going to be an expensive series out of the gate?

In the news stories about NBC deciding to do it last summer, it was
indicated that part of the agreement was that LeBlanc would get
considerably less per episode than he does for Friends. In exchange,
Warner (Warner Television will make Joey for NBC, as it made Friends)
will cast him in two feature films and NBC has committed to doing the
show or paying a big penalty if they don't.

I think they promised LeBlanc the "Friends" slot

A sign of how desperate NBC is to hold onto anything remotely
resembling Friends.Big mistake .The character of Joey is not worthy
of his own show.

LOL. Coming from someone who panned several shows before they
even premiered this season.

remember the last time Matt LeBlanc was spun off a show?

MARRIED WITH CHILDREN. I think his (and his tv father's) show was TOP
OF THE HEAP or something like that. it did not last long. i expect a
similar fate to JOEY, except that the entire S1 DVD boxset should be
available by July...

I think you can hardly compare this spin-off with that one. LeBlanc was
an unknown at the time, and the actor playing his father wasn't much of
a star either. And they were playing new characters, not a character
that viewers have come to know over the course of years.

It would be more appropriate to compare this with Frasier or Rhoda. It
remains to be seen whether LeBlanc can carry a show, but I think it
really depends on the supporting cast and characters, and how good the
writing is.
