Yes, for now I use it, but I like xmms much more than alsaplayer.

Yeah I've been on the lookout for an xmms replacement.. It seems like
xmms development has stalled for now and there are more and more
annoyances with it (no equalizer for oggs, random crashes, more
random crashes while playing streams, your alsa problems....).
But freeamp and others just dont have the functionality and also seem
to be moving very slowly and noatun is about as unstable as it gets.

I can't switch to esound, neither. xmms hangs with every output plugin
'til it decides to work again.

That sounds quite bizarre. Have you tried the XMMS lists? Or the ALSA
lists? Those error messages don't look like an XMMS problem to me.
Sorry I can't come up with anything better...
