I want to purchase an ATA road case for a guitar/keyboard amp. This
case will mainly be transported in the back seat of a car and
occasionally in a trailer with the sound equipment. I have been
considering an Anvil, because I am familiar with the brand. What other
brands should I consider? Cost is not a concern, I want the best,
highest quality. Thanks.

George's comments are consistent with lots of others.

I'd put a finer line on it: if you're going to be loading it into a truck or
trailer, follow the lead and avoid SKB. However, if you are going to be
loading this into the back seat of your car a lot, consider not getting an
ATA case. ATA cases are made for loading/shipping and are seriously heavy
besides not being cheap.... ATA cases are not nice to upholstery either...
If you don't get an ATA case, don't truck-load it.

Have a look at www.casetechnology.com - they make an ultra-light line and an
ATA line.

with all of the case companies around one thing to consider is where you are
in the country... to save on shipping...

so where are you?

I like the recessed hardware on the ATA cases. Also, I really only
need the case to protect the amp from bumps and cosmetic damage. What
about the composite material some of the cases use? This case will
never be used for shipping or touring. Isn't there a rounded corner
option that would make it more upholstery friendly? Thanks for the
input. BTW, I like the look of the L&M Engineering cases. Are the
composite panel cases significantly lighter? Do they cost more?

These guys are way up in Michigan, but I've had excellent success with
their product. They make the best console dog house I've ever seen. (see

I'm going to second the SKB suggestion. SKB rack cases aren't durable (the
latches are a big problem, from my experience), but I can vouch for the
keyboard cases.

I've had my wife's keyboard in one for several years. It's transported with
all the other church equipment in a van twice a week (2 round-trips). It's
loaded and handled roughly from time to time, and it's been great. The
latches have been great, and the fit is tight.

If you're going to ship it, truck it, or aren't the one that's going to move
it around, consider an Anvil type case. But, weight is a concern for us.

My wife's Kurzweil weighs 26 pounds, without the case, and we live upstairs.
With an SKB case (17.5 pounds), we're at 43.5 pounds. That's pushing the
limit for one arm, IMO. That in one hand, and the bag containing the stand
and bench in another, and that's a load for two arms.

After lugging that thing around for years, I can fully say I would not want
something that long any heavier. If you always have somebody else around to
help, then maybe consider an Anvil style, but I'll take an SKB keyboard case
for our application anyday.

I agree with you there. Our keyboard player uses SKB cases for his Kurzweil,
Moog 341 and Roland Juno. All 3 of them seem to be surviving things like the
recent 9000 mile tour with no troubles. His Hohner D6 clavinet and B3
chopper are in anvil style cases. Both of those were custom built and quite
expensive, but seem to be the correct box for the job.

I don't care for SKB cases but some how managed to own a couple. On the plus
side, they have sent me replacement latches for free. I have some medium duty
Hybrid cases that have been in use for about 15 years without a breakdown. Bill
