Hey everyone,

I've recently run across an interesting problem. For some odd reason, any
time I try to install a program in XP, the Windows Installer (ie
InstallShield) has begun to take an inordinately long time to load the
installation package, and in the case of BattleField 1942 it won't even load
at all. I end up killing the program and getting the error message "Could
not call function" right before I get the standard Windows "this program has
been terminated" notification. I've tried running the full SystemWorks
suite and nothing fixes the problem. I've also run several other diagnostic
utilities, but to no avail. Does anybody have any suggestions about what I
can do to fix the situation?

Hi Alex,

Suggestions and Checkpoints for fixing Windows Installer error messages:

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 msi, msiexec /unreg and msiexec /regserver

Start/Run/Regedit/gpedit.msc/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Installer/Prohibit User Installs

Windows Installer can use logging to help assist in troubleshooting issues with installing software packages. To enable verbose logging apply this edit:

Windows Installer Logging or Cleanup Utility (Line 84)

Windows Installer will store the logs in the TEMP directory. The filename is random, but begins with the letters "Msi" and end with a .log extension.

You are very welcome, Alex and thanks. Another note is, if you are running DirectX 9, many users are having this same issue. It seems to be prevalent with certain graphics cards and the dxdiag tool, doesn't help.

The only workaround so far is to uninstall DirectX 9. If this is your case and an option you are willing to try...

I have the download for the uninstaller listed on my site. The only modification to be made is to extract the zip file to C:\DXTEMP and
not C:\DXTEMP! as per the readme. Also, run it only in safe mode.

Uninstall DirectX 9 (Line 112)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Then try to install the program. Good luck, Alex.

I've tried all of the suggestions you've provided and still none of them
seem to work. The Windows Installer still doesn't do anything for
battlefield 1942 and still takes an extremely long time to install anything
else. Do you have any other suggestions?

Come to think of it, I may as well throw this in: My properties pages for
anything (the System, folders, files) also take an extremely long time to
load. In extreme cases, I'll call up a property page and it won't come up
until an hour and a half later! Any help with this is sincerely
appreciated.

Alex,

At this point I can only suggest checking for updated graphic drivers. Good luck and post back with your findings when you get this solved.
