Original-subject: long-term viability of comp.archives
Reposted-by: e...@msen.com (Edward Vielmetti, MSEN)

Postings to comp.archives in July will be much less than "normal".
I'm taking a breather to work on the code, to try to get my filtering
to be less time-consuming, to take some time off, and to make sure
that there's an Internet connection available for my use.

If you are running an automated service that relies on comp.archives
data, be aware that it's going to not have the usual volume of inputs
for a while. I'm going to try to get out a few every week.

The long-term viability of comp.archives depends on MSEN getting its
Internet connection approved and hooked up; some unwanted political
snags hit late last week and they're going to take some effort and
energy to put right. (If necessary I will post the gory details,
don't you worry about that.) If we're not on the net, then obviously
I can't provide the service to anyone (paying or gratis); my employer
(day job) is willing to have me spend some time watching the net for
useful stuff, but not to the extent that comp.archives entails.

I did not expect these problems to come to a head so quickly, but as
it turns out I need to make sure that we can afford keep an Internet
connection at reasonable terms much more than I need to watch the net
for neat stuff.

[Please forward to other lists as necessary.]

"With all of the attention and publicity focused on gigabit networks,
not much notice has been given to small and largely unfunded research
efforts which are studying innovative approaches for dealing with
technical issues within the constraints of economic science."
