I'm interested in anyone's input on the Salomon TR Mg Elite vs. the K2
Mod 8. I've seen the Mod 8 in person and even put on a pair but they
didn't have my size. My normal shoe size is 11 1/2 EE and their largest
size was 11. The 11s were extremely tight. I've heard the Salomons may
fit a wider foot better. One of my main concerns with the Mg Elite is
the microbearings. From what I've heard the microbearings may just be a
fad. Most of the top pros still use the standard size 608 bearing.
None of the stores I've been in carry the microbearings nor the wheels
to fit, although I can find them on the web. I believe the solid
aluminum frame on the Mod 8 is superior to the twinmetal frame of
magnesium and aluminum on the Mg Elite. In my opinion I think a one
piece frame would have greater power transfer than two pieces joined
together. Another issue is whether or not Salomon has improved the
durability of their liners.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Microbearings should not be a concern, IMHO Just a possible nuisance.
Even if all manufacturers dropped them a like a hot potato after this
year (unlikely), you could still use sleeves to make them compatible
with normal "608" wheels. And, of course, simply replacing the 698's
with 608's is always an option.

I can't say the twinmetal design inspires me either. It seems to me
that if you want something stiffer, the last thing you do is add another
joint, which could loosen and break. Notice that the frame used on the
TR Vitesse and Carbon is all aluminum.

On Salomon's web site there is a posting from someone who appears to have
broken one or more rivets holding their twinmetal frame together.

in 2002 you'll see more and more mfg's go to a mini bearing to shed weight off
the skate..or at least some type of bearing system found on nearly all models
throughout the line...

The mini bearings are total junk. They require that you have to
replace the bearings on a brand new pair of skates after a couple of
hundred miles. That's ridiculous

People should just refuse to buy skates with mini-bearings. They will
switch back to 608s pretty quick when they see that happening.

mini bearings are for racers, not fitness skaters. wheels with mini bearing
hubs are usually more expensive. The mini bearing adapter to a regular hub
isn't very strong either and it cracks.

Mini bearing is marketing hype.

I found the Mod 8's to be narrower than the Salomon TR Mg's.

They are indeed lighter but you sacrafice strength (don't ever try to
aggressive skate with those lol) and they don't necessary spin better.
I had some terrible experiences with TwinCam bearings... now i prefer
zerodrag bearings with their rubber shield. Not sure if K2 mod 8 still uses
twincam but i think salomon does
