Hi Jeremy,

Perhaps the modem configuration information within the Winfax Pro
portion of your registry is damaged. To solve this, we would need to
remove this information manually and then reconfigure the modem for
use with Winfax Pro. The procedure to do so follows:

/-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
A. Exit Winfax and the controller
1. Exit Winfax Pro
2. Down near your system clock is an icon of a small yellow
fax machine. Click on it with your right mouse button. Once
it shows you a menu, left click on the EXIT option.
B. Start the DELTEST utility
1. Go to START-->FIND-->FILES OR FOLDERS
2. In the named field, type 'DELTEST.EXE'
3. Click the "Find Now" button
4. When the file appears in the bottom portion, double-click
on it to start it up.
C. Use the utility to erase the modems information from the Winfax
registry. This will NOT affect the modem in Windows 95/NT
1. Select "Custom Diagnostics" and click "Next"
2. Select "Registry Editor" with a checkmark and click "Next"
3. Click on the "Advanced Button" on the right hand side. An
abridged version of your registry appears.
4. If you have a Commsuite(Shared) folder on the left hand
side of your screen, click the '+' to the left of it to expand
the folders within. Otherwise, perform the same action on the
Commsuite folder.
5. One of the expanded folders is named "Modems". Highlight
this and press delete on your keyboard and affirm the action.
6. Exit from the registry editor window
D. Exit DELTEST utility and reconfigure modem in Winfax.
1. Click "Cancel" on the Deltest and click "Yes" to confirm
the action when prompted.
2. Exit the "Find" window - not needed anymore.
3. Shut down and restart the computer
4. Start Winfax Pro program
5. In the program, from the menu, click SETUP-->MODEM.
6. Make sure your fax modem is listed in the "Active Modem"
field. If it is not use the drop down arrow to the right of
it to make it so.
7. Click "OK" and the modem configuration wizard will begin.
8. Follow through with the wizard until it states "Finished"

Samuel,

I followed the protocol, with the premise that the modem

configuration information within the Winfax Pro

portion of my registry may be damaged. I removed the information
manually and then reconfigured the modem for use with Winfax Pro.
However, the modem continues to answer the outgoing calls (whenever
the "Automatic Receive Mode" is chosen). And Is there a modem
string which I can type in somewhere to minimize this occurrence?

Also, does TAPI have anything to do with monitoring the action of a
given phone line. If not TAPI, what about TELEPHONY driver (the
installed Windows 98 telephony drivers is Unimodem Service Provider).

Incidentally, I have written Microsoft (Windows 98), USR/3COM (Voice
Modem) and Dell about my current problem. And similar to me (I've
used modems since '85), they've never heard of anything like this
occurring. I feel the problem has something to do with Windows 98
not really cooperating with Winfax 8.0.

Hi Jeremy,

Only the latest revision (8.03) of Winfax Pro is compatible with
Windows 98 TAPI. There are two different paths you can choose to
update to WinFax PRO 8.03 from Live Update and it depends on which
version you have presently.

To verify the version of WinFax PRO you are using start the
application and select Help\About WinFax from the menu. Follow the
appropriate procedure depending on which version of WinFax PRO 8.0 you
have.

WinFax PRO 8.0 or 8.01:
Run the Live Update from Help\Live Update menu option in WinFax and
choose to update from WinFax 8.0 or 8.01. The file download should
be approximately 6.2 MB. Follow the prompts to complete the update
and reboot the system when completed.

You can also Download the file directly from:
ftp/public/english_us_canada/products/winfax_pro/ver8/updates/803patch/80to803

WinFax 8.02:
Run the Live Update from Help\Live Update menu option in WinFax and
choose to update from WinFax 8.02. The file download is
approximately 690 KB. Follow the prompts to complete the update and
reboot the system when completed.

You can also Download the file directly from:
ftp/public/english_us_canada/products/winfax_pro/ver8/updates/803patch/802to803

Note:
If you choose the wrong file it will download the file and then prompt
you that you cannot complete the update so check the version of WinFax
you have first.

Hi Jeremy,

The 'downgrading' of TAPI procedure was performed by Dapo Olatunbosun
for pager difficulties. Until your message, I have not heard of the
Windows 98 TAPI being the cause of Winfax Pro answering outgoing
calls. There is something more going on here, I feel.

I recommend using hyperterminal to monitor for modem responses:

1. Close down any communications or fax programs, including WinFax
and the Controller that may be running.
2. Click on Start\Programs\Accessories and select Hyperterminal.
Doubles click on the Hypertrm.exe or Hypertrm file to launch the
application.
3. At the Connection Description Window type in the letter ' A ' and
click on OK.
4. When the Phone Number Dialog appears, do not enter a phone number.
Instead Click on the down arrow next to the "Connect Using" field and
select "Direct to COMx" and click on OK. The "x" would be the com port
the modem is connected to.
5. When the Port Settings dialog appears click on OK.

You are now in control of the modem via Hyperterminal. We will now
test its ability to dial out using class 2 fax protocol.

Type the following:
ATZ <PRESS ENTER> OK (Expected response - modem
initialized)

Make your outgoing call. If you see a 'RING' in your Hyperterminal
screen then you've just discovered the problem. You see, if TAPI or
the COM port sends a RING to Winfax Pro while it is in auto-receive
mode, Winfax Pro sends an ATA (answer command) to the same (TAPI or
COMx) port.

If the test in Hyperterminal reveals this is what is happening, then
you have a problem with the modem's installation within Windows itself
- either a hardware conflict, software conflict, incorrect/damaged
drivers, or damaged COM layer in the OS itself.

Let me know what you discover,
