Have you heard The Velvet Janes? They're a female duo, pop with a dash of
eclectic rock overtones. I own two of their CDs: Opus No. 3 and Venus
Calling -- both are great. It's hard to compare the Velvet Janes to any
other group; their lyrics are creative and often clever, and the music is
the kind you can listen to over and over again. The Velvet Janes have a
third CD, Live at the Velvet Lounge, which I don't have, but which I'm
going to order as soon as I've finished this message. You can read more

I've done a lot of trading with people in Australia, mostly Andrew, and
have a number of people I like a lot from down there. My Friend the
Chocolate Cake is one of my faves, but I'm also fond of Margot Smith, Kerry
Simpson, the go-betweens (and various offshoots), Mae Moore, Nick Cave, the
waifs, Jeff Lang, suvome, Wendy Rule, Pavo Cristatus, and Swirl. (That
about exhausts what I have, which mostly comes from trades worked out
through ecto.)

Yes, there are a couple of others but they seem to keep a rather low
profile at the moment.

Yeay, another fan of Paradise Motel! Great. Though I must admit I haven't
heard much of them since they relocated to the UK...
Have you heard about The Dear Hunters? it's the current project of
ex-cloud Jodie Phillis (and other experienced and accomplished musicians)
but it's rather different in style, much more mellow. I'd describe it as
country tinged inner-city pop... think Love Me, Flicker, or perhaps
slightly more mainstream Tarnation.
Or if you'd like something more along the lines of Clouds, you could try
Skulker (recently discovered by JJJ, duh!) or for something much more
obscure, Twelve24...
And, ahem, sorry for the shameless self-promotion but my own website
though slightly neglected at the moment might also provide you with some
suggestions.
At the moment I'm still under the spell of Wendy Rule whom I saw this
Friday. She visits us only rarely so it was a bit of a special occasion
for me, and she didn't disappoint - she was brilliant! Wendy has been
mentioned here a few times but I repeat again she's worth of Ecto's
attention; her powerful voice and stage presence make her a compelling
performer. BTW she just put a number of songs on mp3.com, a couple of
them mastered by none other than ex-ectophile Anthony Horan...

Be sure and get hold of the debut solo album for MFTCC and Not
Drowning Waving singer and songwriter David Vridie. It's absolutely
astonishingly good, and if you like the Chocolate Cake stuff, you're
going to love this one. It's co-produced (with David) and mixed by a
UK guy named Ian Caple, who may be familiar to some of you via his
work with the likes of Tricky and Tindersticks.

There's a brand new Swirl album recorded, mixed and mastered, though
there's no release date set at the moment. A fantastic album, though -
a bit more direct song-wise than "The Last Unicorn", but beautifully
produced by Daniel Denholm and featuring new
singer/guitarist/songwriter Keira Hodgkison as lead vocalist on most
of the songs. The first single from the album, "Time", came out last
year and is, for me, the best bit of recorded music from 1999.
Absolutely beautiful.

As we've finally established conclusively over in aus.music, they've
broken up - though I don't think they've told their record company

I did actually re-subscribe to Ecto for a while late last year, but
none of my posts seemed to be getting through, and I haven't
re-subscribed since I changed ISPs. Nice to see some of you here,
though. :)
I've actually just returned tonight from the studio where Wendy's
recording album #3, which should be out around August. It's sounding
magnificent; this one's going to me a much quieter, darker record than
the previous two, with a greater bias towards acoustic instruments
rather than keyboards and samples.
(Obligatory self-explanation bit follows :)
For those of you that don't know, I've actually been working with
Wendy since 1994, and assisted with production and supervised
post-production on her first album, "Zero" and now look after her web
site and assorted post-production bits and pieces on the recordings.
The stuff on the mp3.com page (www.mp3.com/wendyrule) is all from the
"Zero" sessions and the ones that followed for what was to be the
second album; there's otherwise-unavailable recordings there to
download (or buy on CD :-) as well as a rather over-the-top
reconstruction of one of the "Zero" songs that I put together from
tapes of various mix experiments that were done at the time.
Aside from that mp3.com page, you can find out pretty much everything
there is to know about Wendy's music at www.wendyrule.com
