You can use Xine; it is still under development, but it plays nicely your
DVDs. The URL is:

http://xine.sourceforge.net/

I haven't had any real luck with Xine (which probably means I screwed up

Now there's a RPM for SuSE Linux that makes it a lot easier; I also tried
to compile before, and, like you, didn't manage to get it up and running...

It works mostly for cards like Matrox G400, it doesn't use hardware Motion
Compensation or other properties in Nvidia cards yet. I have a P3 750, and
a Geforce DDR. With kernel 2.4 it runs at acceptable speeds, though not
perfect nor smooth. It crashes once and then, if you for example FF or skip
a chapter, or change the screen resolution, etc..

Shortly, it is not a grown up stable program yet.. Not yet, but it is on
the right way. I'd say, in the next 2 versions, it will work a lot stabler.

By the way, does anybody have the CSS patch for the latest version (4.2)?

Well, have you heard of an utility call DeCSS? It was written specifically
because there are no Linux DVD players. Of course RIAA didn't let a little
thing like international law get in the way of having him arrested and put
to trial.

You can do a google search for DeCSS and use that to decode and play DVD's
on your Linux box. Or on The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk), they
listed a couple of alternatives that have higher throughput than DeCSS.
Just search their site for DeCSS. Cheers.
