I've started to get junk email from vendors who are mailing to
various user group list.

Their from address doesn't seem to exist.

Who do I complain to? This is an obviously blatant violation of NSF
net work policies. Plus, it's pretty damn annoying.

I know this is a joke posting, but keep in mind that USNET
is not the real world. In the real world, I have a BA Journalism
and was editor-in-chief for a small newspaper.

You missed the entire point of my original message. I was talking
about junk email over NSF networks, not junk USENET posts.
I know USENET != Internet. (As a matter of fact, I spent an hour on the
phone with `Tailgunner' Joe Abernathy trying to explain to him that very fact.)

Pray, tell me where this mystical country is where the natives
don't make too many stupid errors :-)

I think the last line of Mr. Townsend's .sig is pretty ironic. He's
complaining about commercial postings to mailing lists while at the
same time running a mailing list devoted to a single product.

As far as I'm concerned, junk mail in your electronic mail box is
pretty much like junk mail in your real mail box -- annoying as hell,
likely to make me avoid the vendor, but not something I'd make
illegal.

Hey, I'm also on the sun-managers mailing list. Tons of vendor-specific
information get shoved around in the name of research. There's
a big difference between "How do I make an <x> do <foo>?" and
"Today and today only, RAM for only $39 a Megabyte! Call now!"

First, you stop feeling superior to others, which you are not.

Second, you learn the language of the country you are visiting,

before posting vulgarities, grammatical errors, etc.

Third, you realize that Usenet is not subject to any NSFNet rules.
If some system administrators decide to allow Usenet to be
transported over NSFNet, that's their decision and their
responsibility to account for if NSFNet's "King" ever calls upon
them to do so. But since NSFNet does not really have a King, this
is most unlikely, and connected sites can probably continue to
transport the thistle mailing list, alt.personals, and misc.forsale
with impunity.

Fourth, you realize that 95% of us appreciate commercial postings
because they help us do our research and our jobs. We think of
people like you as the enemy of the people who wish to know, not
as the Holy Saviours that you pretend to be. We do not need your
help, and wish you would disappear. (The more aggressive of us
call you Commies, and wish you would sicken and die, but most of us
are nicer than that.)

Fifth, your desire to tell someone else what to do marks you as an
obvious psychopath. You should as such not have been admitted to
this country in the first place. Since you have assumed the phony
American name, Eric, it is not obvious where you came from, but you
made too many stupid errors to be a native. You should be aware
that there is no statute of limitations for fraud on immigration
matters. You have the same personality type that perpetrated the
Cultural Revolution in China, that killed over 10 million innocent
people.

*

Well, fellow netter, I hope you realize that this followup is in

jest, yet it is also serious in its way. The offences that this
person has committed -- against freedom of speech, against freedom
from inquisition by one's neighbors (study the Cultural Revolution
if you think this is unimportant), against everything free and good
in our country -- are large. If I weren't a pacifist, I'd like to
see them punished in accordance with their wickedness.
