"Greedo shoots first" is better than "Han shoots first"

I am watching Star Wars: A New Hope (Special Edition) with my friends and my
favorite scene is the one where Han Solo is confronted by Greedo in the
cantina. I find it absolutely brilliant the way Han is able to remain calm
as Greedo shoots first and they Han coolly fires back with a shot of his
own, felling him.

What is upsetting to me is that there is a rabid minority of so-called SW
fans who hate the "Greedo shoots first" concept. They prefer the original
low budget scene where Han shoots first. The reason why Han shoots first in
the original is because of studio politics and the available technology at
the time. Since the technology wasn't advanced enough to show Greedo
shooting first, George Lucas had to resort to Han shooting first, which was
a cheap work-around which left Han's character much to be desired.

Han shooting first makes him a glorified anti-hero who is nothing more than
a scoundrel. I much prefer the Star Wars: A New Hope (Special Edition)
version of this scene. I am glad that George Lucas corrected this
abomination as it has no place in a classic film series such as Star Wars.
I think that anyone who would prefer the old outdated scene is akin to
someone who hates the brilliant character of Jar Jar Binks.

However, I have also seen the original "Empire Strikes Back" and I must say
that ESB: SE is far superior. I especially enjoyed the part where Luke is
screaming for his life in SE instead of falling silently in the original.
The latter makes Luke look like a reactionary, right-wing blowhard (strong,
silent type) while the former makes him seem more realistic, not afraid to
express his fear and emotions.

With the changes in the SE, I think they have made Star Wars more
politically correct in order to prepare audiences for George Lucas's
greatest masterpiece thus far, "The Phantom Menace". True Star Wars fans
will agree that TPM far surpasses the original trilogy (ANH, ESB and ROTJ)
although I would agree that AOTC is a close second. However, some cynical
so-called Star Wars fans have attacked this superior piece of filmcraft and
have abandoned the SW franchise. These are traitors to the vision of George
Lucas.

I think that these so-called fans are what I would classify as "Han
Solo/Boba Fett/Darth Maul" fans. These idiots prefer the darker side of
Star Wars instead of its more positive and more politically correct side
(Jar Jar Binks, Ewoks, Greedo shoots first, etc).

Now to get a few things off of my chest. I'm sick and tired of you racist
homophobes who don't like Jar Jar Binks. Star Wars is about political
correctness, diversity and multiculturalism, and if you got a problem with
that: sod off you stupid wanker! You deserve to be branded and imprisoned
because you are a hate speech criminal. Jar Jar haters are no better than
the "forces of darkness" that the visionary Lucas has spoken out against.

I have a question for you Jar Jar haters: if everyone hates Jar Jar so much
then how come TPM is the highest grossing Star Wars movie of all time? Can
millions of true Star Wars fans be wrong?

The truth is Jar Jar Binks and TPM make ANH and ESB look like shit, OK? Jar
Jar is a much more interesting and more inclusive character than that
misogynist
Han Solo. His fans are typical male chauvinist anti-choice pigs who voted
for the right-wing racist cowboy George Bush. If you don't like Jar Jar
then you are not a true Star Wars fan. Racists like you deserve to be
stripped of your civil rights. I believe in freedom of speech but hate
speech like this should be banned and its practitioners should be imprisoned
for life.

VOTE DEMOCRAT IN 2002!

Are you alright Tavington?

Just wondering, many a newsgroup person has accidently posted more than
one of the same message.. but to repeat sending it after the first batch is
a little, er, strange.

I happen to dispise Jar Jar Binks, but I am of course entitled to my
opinion, and I also suspect you are a troll.

Not a case of a troll situation but it kept reposting what I had
written. Why, I don't know. They helped me get it straightened out
right away and it was something on their end in the equipment. I just
hate calling someone a troll if it is due to this kind of thing.

Now, if the person is known for constantly posting the same post, then
that becomes a different matter. Then he is indeed a troll. I only
skimmed his post, I admit, but it didn't strike me as being troll-like.

He first posted this back in April - got some good bites too. The
essential message is that "I love all the parts of Subject X that the
typical fan doesn't, and vice versa, and I'm a political nut too!" Aims
for reactionaries. He occasionally goes for RAMCF as well. It's usually
a fun read, but the repeats make it annoying. I did a search on Gooja,
and it seems he's been trolling the boxing group about the Lewis / Tyson
fight.

Oh yeah, strong silent type.... Umm or maybe he was in a bit of SHOCK from
having his hand cut off and finding out that everything he thought he knew
about his father was a lie.

Ok and so people who like Rambo, are bad fans. Shame on us.

>Star Wars is about political correctness, diversity and multiculturalism,

> that: sod off you stupid wanker!

Star Wars is about a story, you want political correctness go watch
something on the Lifetime network.
I disliked Jar-Jar because he existed for one reason only, to be the guy who
gets Padme to Boss Nass. For such a minor plot point he got waaaaay too much
screen time. We could have had a couple more good scenes.

> I have a question for you Jar Jar haters: if everyone hates Jar Jar so
much

Can
> millions of true Star Wars fans be wrong?

Maybe because in 1977 movies tickets averaged $3.00 , in 1980 they averaged
$3.50 and in 1983 they averaged $4.00, now they average $8.00
If you compare grosses vs. ticket price you get 153,645,218 tickets for Star
Wars (US release), 82,902,500 for Empire Strikes Back, 77,266,093 for Return
of the Jedi and a mere 61,580,777 for Phantom Menace (at 7.00) and
33,844,059 for Attack of the Clones (which is still running)
By the way Star Wars still out grossed Phantom by 30 million domestic, not
bad for a 25 year old flick.

Rich (Tucci) subscribes to the evangelistic version, which goes: He hits
his helmet on the door and he hits his head on his helmet. The
fundamntalist version is outright denial that any such event ever took
place. I find the latter funnier.

It crops up every few months, and it can take some people a suprising
amount of time to catch on, especially back when the fundamentalist
viewpoint was more prevalent. We've had people go so far as to post frame
numbers from the laserdisks.

I tend to go for misdirection:

"You must have one of those strange (insert appropriate adjective)
bootlegs we've been hearing about." This one's my favorite because its
tone is just snarky enough to be a clue. Bonus red herrings: ask about
echo or a second toss in the grapple scene, "Close the blast doors!"
line, Biggs / macrobinoculars scene, etc.

"You must have a defective copy; send it into Lucasfilm for a refund."

"It was taken out of the Special Editions."

"It was added in to the Special Editions."

"When the trooper says, 'See to him!', he's talking about the officer that
Chewie clotheslined a few scenes before." Super bonus red herring: Has
the added advantage of being true. The stormtrooper who doesn't hit his
head doesn't go down, either.

For Duggy, outright bluntheaded denial seems to work best. Most others
seem to like the evangelistic view, or simply watch and laugh into their
sleeves. There are a few spoilers (in the original sense) who, if
present, will clue in the newbie before he finds the answer himmself.
IMO, that's no fun.
