Subject: More on Japanese Conference

FLEAT II: Fun in the Sun

At last count, an anticipated 400+ conference-goers will
participate in FLEAT II, to be held in Nagoya and at Chubu
University in Kasugai, Japan August 4-7. There will be
three keynote speeches during the conference:
on the opening day, at the Nagoya International Center,
Soichi Iijima will give a talk entitled "Prospects for
foreign language education," in which he will trace the
history of language learning in Japan and argue that new
approaches are needed today in language education; on August
5, in the Miura Kohei Memorial Hall at Chubu University,
Gerard Ervin will give a speech entitled "Can technology
fulfill its purpose?," in which he will address basic
concerns such as whether language teachers are making the
right demands on technology, and present seven principles
for the effective integration of technology into language
instruction; and on August 7, the final day of the conference,
Scott Windeatt will present a paper, "New Technologies: New
methodologies?," in which he will insist that the use of
computers in language learning will force revolutionary
changes on teachers, particularly in the area of classroom
management.

An opening day symposium, Machine translation, simultaneous
interpretation: Implications for English education, will
offer participants a chance to see for themselves whether
this seemingly science fiction application of computer technology has finally be
come a
reality, and how this might impact on the language teaching profession.
On August 6, a panel discussion, Comparison of language lab management in
the U.S.A, U.K., and Japan , will provide an opportunity to
consider the challenges for lab management from a variety of
perspectives. The closing day panel discussion,
Incorporating computers into language laboratories, will
present practical applications for computers and multimedia
in the language learning lab, with an emphasis on skill
development, project-based instruction, and classroom
communication.

In addition to these main events, there are many other
presentations, workshops, and technology showcase
demonstrations, covering a wide range of topics and
materials, including interactive video, networking,
self-access learning, hypermedia, and testing. Major
producers and distributors of educational technology will
display their latest equipment and language learning
programs. Whether you are only just beginning to think
technology might be helpful to you or are an experienced
user of modern multimedia, you can experiment freely with
language learning software which you have never seen before.
There is no better place in the world this August for teachers interested in cur
rent
educational trends.

Lest you get the idea that the FLEAT II conference is
strictly business, there are several very special events planned for the
enjoyment of Japanese and international guests. On the evening of August
5, there is a welcome party, or Konshinkai, hosted by Chubu
University Junior College. On Thursday, August 6, conference participants may
enjoy a traditional tea ceremony performed by the young women of
Chubu University Junior College in the Kuho-an tea house on
the Chubu campus. And in the late afternoon there is a grand Cormorant Fishing
Tour, including a visit to Inuyama Castle and the uniquely
Japanese experience of cormorant fishing. On the
afternoon of the final day, August 7, after all sessions
have ended, conference-goers can say their good-byes at a
farewell party held in the Miura Kohei Memorial Hall at
Chubu University.

We hope that you can make it to Kasugai for FLEAT II. You
are welcome to attend and take part in a friendly, open
exchange of ideas on language teaching methodology, modern
technology, and the future of the language teaching
profession. We are looking forward to your participation in
this historic conference.
