Here's my newbie question. What the heck is the difference between a clarkii
and a sebae clown? I have kept both species at one time or another (never
together)but they look the same to me.

Looked it up on google. No differences listed.

Wilkerson's books says that true Sebaes have only two white bars, with
the body stripe forming a rough S, tilting at the top toward the rear of
the fish and into the dorsal fin. Says also they do better in a cooler
aquarium as well, and are not common in the trade (at least when she
wrote the book). Looking at the pic, I've never seen one. The whole
tail area is yellow as well.

Also, just to add, going by the pic in her book, I would say this is a
misidentified clarkii...

so is this:

but this one may be the real thing:

That's awesome. Those are the exact pictures I looked at when I tried to
identify my clown and they sure do look the same to me. I think you are
absolutely right. That last picture fits the description of a sebae
perfectly.

Now that I think back, I remember the ugly sebae clown I had. The S-shaped
line of the sebae isn't as attractive as the solid stripes of the clarkii.
But I think I've only had one in my life.

Thanks for the info.

BTW, I now know that my clown is a clarkii and not a sebae.

And adding to confusion of identifying clown fish is the amount that clown fish
change in both color and patern as they age.
