I've just bought an ATI Radeon 8500 and found to my friggin dismay that my
Abit KT7A Raid is incompatible with it and
ATI know about it but dont know how to fix it. They say that a few people
have replaced their PSU, but I have only just
bought myself a 400W power supply a couple of months ago and aint changing
it again.

Anybody know what causes it and how to fix it ?

Let this serve as a WARNING too !

What's wrong with it? I got the normal KT7 and it's working with the
8500.
Have you looked here: http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm
maybe there is a solution to your problem.

I have a KT7A RAID, ver 1.0 with the latest (?) N drivers. OS is Win XP Pro.
Running an ATI 8500 for the past couple months. Just installed Catalyst
drivers 5 min ago. I'm not aware of any compatibility problems.
btw--how do you know "ATI know about it" (you must be a brit). Is there
something on their website??

P.S. I spoke too soon! The Catalyst drivers turned my system to crap!
Infinite Loop errors no matter what I did. Finally reinstalled the old
drivers and, just to be safe, used System Restore to revert to last week.
Let's see what happens now.........
(but I don't think it's the Abit)

I'm on KT7A - RAID, I'm using the AIW 8500DV though. Have you tried updating
your BIOS, I'm using the ZT ones.

I've got a 64Mb "Built By ATI" Radeon 8500 and it works perfectly with my
ABIT KT7A motherboard. However, before I bought this card I tried a
"Powered By ATI" Jetway Radeon 8500 and that didn't work at all.

It might be worth you taking a look at this website, lots of KT7A tips:

http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm

Hope you get it working, it's a superb card!

Using a KT7A-Raid Rev. 1.0 here with a 8500DV which is a similar card and
it is working here.
It did cause the inside of my case to overheat over time and raised my cpu
temp to +65C underload though but I solved that by adding a extra exhaust
fan to the top of my system and its down to roughly 50C underload now.

http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4041.html is the details regarding the
Abit KT7A and ATI.

They know about it all right but dont know how to fix it. They guess u need
to change your power supply
but I've got a 350W power supply is rubbish. It works fine in a Gigabyte
7IXE with a 250W power supply
so what gives ????

It's a powered by ATI 8500. My mb is a 1.0 and I have the 7N bios so looks
as tho I`m going to have to sell it.

For starters that is the KR7A board on that page, not the KT7A board as
you say. Two different animals. It is also speaking of the "ALL-IN-
WONDER RADEON 8500 128MB" card specifically, not just any old Radeon
8500. It is also a system specific problem as they say "The issue does
not affect all system configurations". That means it only shows up with
some system configurations, making the cause very hard to track down.

Since your running the KT7A not the KR7A board try setting 'Delay DRAM
Read Latch' to 'No Delay' in the BIOS and see if that helps your problem
any.

The only thing similar between the KT7A and the KR7A is their looks, and
the fact that they can both run a Duron or Athlon CPU. They have a
different chipset, different BIOS, and one runs DDR memory, the other
doesn't.
