Anyone tried the little Korg PXR4 digital recorder? Looks like a neat
little unit...

I have a PXR4, a Zoom PS-02, and a Boss BR-532. (Ok, I've had bouts of GAS).

The PXR4 sounds good but the effects aren't terribly nice. The built-in mic
is great (no Neumann, but very passable on this type of device.) It has
the worst user interface of the three.

The Boss is the easiest to use. Sound quality is really good but the
effects are terrible. This isn't a very portable device either.

The Zoom is my favorite. It sounds good, is pretty easy to use (once you
use it a bit), the effects are pretty good, it is really portable, and the
mic is ok. It works well as portable idea sketchpad.

The bolt-in drum machines on all three sound very good. The Zoom has bass
patterns and a mechanism to key in chords for them. Battery life in all
three is mediocre - in the four hour range.

You *could* use any of these to make a full blown CD if you were very
careful and experimented a lot. They are all way better than 4-track
cassette machines of just three or four years ago.
