I am interested in the specific differences between certain Tange
tubing. Can someone tell me the differences (and perhaps a relative
ranking, if possible) of the following tube types?

Tange Champion
Tange Prestige
Tange Infinity
Tange #2
Tange #1

Finally, how do you pronounce "Tange?" I've heard "Tanj" and "Tan-Gay,"
but usually the former from bike shops.

Thanks,

If 'Tange' is a Japanese word, then the proper pronounciation is close to
"tan-gay" -- 'tan' to rhyme with 'on' -- but my 'proper' pronounciation of
'futon' is such that no one on this side of the ocean can understand it.
Pronounce the word as your listeners think it should be pronounced. By
definition the majority of them is right.

Dunno about the tubing products Tange makes, I haven't looked at new bikes in a while!

However, I do remember a blurb in the ads that Tange placed in various cycling rags several
years back that had the pronunciation. It went something like "Tange (say tan-gay)".

Anybody remember the bike name "Frejus"? (Geez, I hope I spelled that right...) I don't
think any two people in the shop I worked for in high-school pronounced this the same
way (nor anybody, the same way twice.)

I would like to add to the list Tange OS (oversized), where does it
fit into the equation. Next, can anybody compare Columbus tubing to Tange
tubing. Is Tange Champion or Tange OS as good, or worse then let's say
Columbus TSX or SLX?

Thanks

Tange is japanese, so it it should be "Tan-Gay".

I don't have my Tange catalog with me so I'll wing it (especially about
the price). First of all, Tange Champion comes in 5 "weights" (#1
though #5). All Tange tube sets are steel. Here is a ranking from high
zoot, light and $$$ to heaver, cheaper:

Tange Prestige: High strengh steel. Used to make light bikes. Costs
about $140 for a tube set.
Regular .4mm thick walls in the thin butts
Super Lite For riders under 135lb
Heavy For very big/strong riders

Tange Champion: A high quality seamless steel tube set. Been around
forever. A little bit heaver than Prestige but a lot cheaper and
probably every bit as good for most riders. Costs about $75 for a
tube set.
Tange Champion #1 .6/.8 butted tubes (I think)
Tange Champion #2 .6/.9 (I think). Same as walls Columbus SL.
Tange Champion #3 Same "size" as Columbus SP.

Tange Infinity: I think this is seamless straight guage tubing. No
butts make it cheaper (and heavier) to than the other tube sets.

The importers (Nova Cycle) pronounce it "Tong-Gay".

I went to the cubicle next to mine and asked the guy there, who has
studied Japanese, whether "tange" means anything in Japanese. He doesn't
think so. I bet it's one of those completely made-up names like "Exage."

So how do you pronounce "Exage"?

According to an ad for Tange forks in this month's "Bicycling" magazine,
Yasujiro Tange was making bicycle products back in the '20's. His grandson,
Yasuhiro Tange, continues the tradition.

Must be some sort of cross between Coppertone and Ben-Gay, huh?

Tange OS is a Prestige tube set and you can get it in 2 "weights". Cost
is about $150 per tubeset. Top tube and seat tube are 28.6mm (1.125")
and the down tube is 30.0mm (1.18").
light: TT (.7x.4x.7mm), DT (.8x.5x.8), ST (.9x.6 ovalized bottom),
CS (.8), ST (.6), fork blades (.8)
medium: TT (.8x.5x.8mm), DT (.9x.6x.9), ST, CS, ST (same as light),
fork blades (.9)

Tange #2 is real similar to Columbus SL. Different steel alloys but the
same weights. I think they feel different but that is probably bunk (as
most people who know about steel will tell you). Not better, just
different. Columbus quality control used to be (long ago) pretty ho hum
but that has probably changed by now. SLX and TSX are more $$$ and
weight than most people need (big bikes excepted). I think the bike
manufacturer has more to do with how good a bike is than the tubing
(assuming a "good" tubing like Tange Champ or Prestige, Columbus SL etc,
True Temper, 4130, Vitus, etc).
