In English, the shortest such word with the vowels in order is
FACETIOUS. If you like Y as a vowel, FACETIOUSLY.

Nope, we were taught in primary school that there were five vowels
(shades of when "y" was the mediaeval i-longa). As for that word,
I think it's "bird". Les Autrichiens ont mieux: leur devise
du temps de l'empire austro-hongois: AEIOU.

I think OISEAU is just a short as you can get, although it's not in
alphabetical order.

I can't think of any word that contains those five plus a Y.
If anybody has a computerized French dictionary, it should be quite simple
to write a little program that would find such word if it exists.

It is not absolutely obvious because of the accentuated characters;
you don't want to count an accent mark as a character but it is
usually stored as such in a computer. If you get rid of them
altogether, things are indeed trivial, thanks to perl version 4.0
patch level 18 just released by Larry Wall. The following script
sorts six voyels words in ascending length, and lexicographically for
words of same length.

For the five voyels problem, an adapted script just give the shorter
word instead of a too long list.

With a previous version of perl, you are obliged to defined a sort
routine instead of using a anonymous routine. For people interested
in this language, which runs on Unix and MSDOS and obsoletes at once
tens of UNIX (now in)utilities, there is a newslist called
comp.lang.perl.

The french dictionnary I have used is part of a package called Epelle
written by zimme...@inria.inria.fr.

As a treat, I gave you the output of the same scripts for the English
language.

The french dictionnary does not include "nom propres", but the English
one bundled with SunOS does: (I don't know the English equivalent for
"nom propre")

Dans la langue francaise, "y" *est* une voyelle! Donc votre proposition est
annullee d'avance.
