BOB'S EYES PRO version 2.0.1 Jul 3, 1992
#
This little application shows several windows (up to eight) each one with
two eyes looking curiously at your pointer. They have their own ``life''.
They are designed to work in the background under system 6 with MultiFinder
on or System 7 and later.
It is a kind of X-Eyes for the Macintosh Operating System, but try them
both on a Mac running A/UX and compare !!!
#
Now Bob's Eyes Pro is Free Software distributed under the GNU GPL version 2
or later. SOURCES ARE NOW INCLUDED. (for those of you who want to learn how
NOT to write macintosh applications). I retain the copyright anyway.
Using/Copying it means accepting the terms of the GNU GPL. Read CAREFULLY
the files READ-ME, COPYING and COPYING-LIBRARY included with this
distribution.
Anyway if you like it, feel free to SEND ME A POSTCARD, to tell me you
appreciated it. However you are not morally obliged to.
Please report to me any enhancement you have made.
Version 2.0.1 fixes a few little flaws in the first version 2 and eliminates
some useless code. Supersedes version 2.0.0.
I have also several E-Mail addresses to report problems etc...

Subject: [*] Bonk-1.4.2.cpt.hqx

Bonk is a simple mouse action shareware game inspired by the gopher
games in some video arcades-the ones where you "Bonk" the gophers
on the head with a soft mallet. There is a 256 Color and Black and
White version included with documentation. Bonk is System 7.0 compatible
shareware. Try it and share it!

1.4.2 is a significant change to the previous version(s). I mucked
around with the difficulty levels and made the easiest level easier
for younger players. The hardest level is still pretty hard, but
easier than it was. Also, I fixed a stupid mistake where the sounds
wouldn't play properly on a Mac Plus or earlier.

Please, send me some e-mail if you have any comments, suggestions,
or questions about Bonk.

Subject: [*] PSI 2.3

PSI 2.3 / July 5, 1992

Personal System for Information Management and Retrieval

This newest version of PSI doesn't introduce much new functionality,
but I cleaned up a bit and made PSI smaller in the process.

Changes since 2.2:
- The find selection dialog can show either the first or the first
two field values of the found cards.
- File manipulation is now in menu `File' for both PSI and text files.
- The import of numbers is done correctly.
- PSI needs less run-time memory (1MB)!

Changes since 2.0:
- Windows adapt better to small screens (SE, Classic).
- Export procedures can define font information (in RTF).

See the Read Me file for more information.

PSI runs on all Macs with System 6 or 7 and at least 2MB of main memory
(1MB under System 6 without MultiFinder).
Note that PSI is not yet 32-bit clean; if you get a type 1 error
when trying to run PSI, you have to switch to 24-bit mode.

About PSI:

PSI is a handy system for the management and retrieval of your
personal data, be it addresses, CD collections, or bibliographic
references. It is intended for the non-commercial user. It may not
be as full-fledged as some data-base systems, but has many features
that you won't find in most commercial systems. Also, you may find
it easier to set up and faster to use. (Try the sample sessions!)
PSI is useful for a broad range of data. Indexing with descriptors
makes searching for the data you need fast, and the interface to
other data-base formats (import and export) is quite powerful.

PSI is shareware. Give it a try - and if you decide to use it,
please register and send $20 to one of the addresses given in the
documentation. (Site-license rates are available.)

If you have questions, send me e- or p-mail.

by Riccardo Ettore (version 3.2 rev. Monday, March 16, 1992)

What does TypeIt4Me do?
Anytime you can enter text in your Mac by typing it at the keyboard,
TypeIt4Me can do it for you - faster and more accurately. And since it
actually fools the system into thinking that YOU are doing the typing,
it can go places where you wouldn't be able to use the Paste command (if
you click on its icon on the left of the Apple menu, it will even pop up
during a Modal dialog!). However, since it's not at all based on the
Clipboard mechanism, it can only enter text and will never be able to
handle graphics of any sort.

Has anyone out there been able to get ARA working on a IIci? I have a
IIci with 7.0 on it (tuned up), using the built-in video, 8MB of RAM,
170MB hard drive with the usual plethora of inits/control panels, etc
on it...

I've installed ARA 3 or 4 times, and while I can get it to call out to
a Powerbook running it (and connect), I can't do the reverse...the
reason seems to be that under the USERS & GROUPS control panel, I don't
see the little addendum to the window that deals with Remote Access (i.e.,
I have no way to enable it for a user...).

Anyone got any ideas? I've tried installing with file sharing enabled and
disabled, and neither had any effect...even tried replacing the USERS &
GROUPS file with a copy from the powerbook, all to no avail!

Is there an update...something I need to do? Zap the PRAM maybe?

Please respond via e-mail....thanx!

Well, I'm giving away the trade secrets that keep me employed....:)

1) I don't know of any way to avoid it. Keep a backup.

2 and 3) You cannot edit the checksum, but you can correct the error.
a) Using a tool such as Norton Disk Editor, click through the sectors in
the file (make sure your clicking on the scroll bar for sectors in the
file, not the one for sector on the disk) until you get the bad data mark
error.
b) Once you get that error, "refresh" the sector by typing over the
first byte. Usually, the bad sector will contain all 0's, so you would
type "00" over the first byte. However, if there's something different
there, type the same thing as what's there.
c) Choose "Write Sector" from the Objects menu (if you're using Norton).
d) Continue through the rest of the sectors in the file, repeating the
procedure for any more bad sectors you find.

Usually this will fix the file enough for you to at least get it open. You
will undoubtedly lose some info, but I usually get back about 90 percent.
Also, be aware that sometimes when you get to the bad spot in the file, it
will lock your computer up, so be prepared to restart.

Now, a word of warning for the over-ambitious. THIS IS A DANGEROUS
PROCEDURE. YOU MIGHT DO MORE DAMAGE TO THE FILE THAN WAS ORIGINALLY THERE.
Usually, that's not a concern because the file is already too damaged to
get open. I just don't want to mislead anyone into thinking this is an
ultra-safe procedure and they can practice on their thesis. If you're
nervous about doing, don't. Find a local Macintosh expert (and make sure
*they* actually know as much as they claim). :)

Well, now! Misery LOVES company! I have been plagued by that and related
problems for weeks. I can offer the following information:

System configuration: Mac IIfx w/ Nexus accelerator, 128 MB RAM, System 7.0.1
with tuneup. System heap expanded to 500K + 0% using NOW Startup manager
prefs.
Crashes occur in both 24-bit and 32-bit addressing modes, even when all
extensions are disabled using the shift key during re-boot. Minimal number of
extensions normally installed. Problem seemed to disappear temporarily when I
completely re-installed the system. Some programs seem particularly
vulnerable:
SuperPaint 3.0, Excel 4.0, QuarkXPRESS 3.1.

At one point SAM 3.0.7 and Gatekeeper 1.2.5 were simultaneously active, but
they don't seem to like each other so I disabled both. From that point on the
error frequency increased noticeably.

Does ANYONE know what the trouble might be or how to cure it?

I was having problems with a CG 9400 Image Setter that registered just fine
with every application except for Quark. Well, their Technical Support

Quark support told me that I was too picky. It seems that anything within a

A friend of mine is testing it for a review in TidBITS. The basic
upshot so far is that it's a tad clumsy if you're a Mac person, but
not too bad if you're a Unix person. It seems to work pretty well
and at a decent, if not impressive speed (on a SparcStation I).

Any soothing words greatly appreciated.

A while ago I asked on the net if anyone besides myself was having
trouble accessing XTND from Nisus on a Quadra. From the replies I
got it seemed that quite a few people were; on the other hand, Mel
Martinez had exactly my set-up and he wasn't.

It seems that the solution is to move all the translators out of the
translators folder into the XTND folder and then trash the translator
folder. I believe that I tried just *copying* the translators out of the
translators folder into the XTND folder, and this didn't help. But
*moving* them and trashing their folder works. Thanks, Mel!

I've only tried this with Nisus 3.06 '040; it may not work with Nisus
3.06 (which otherwise, as far as I could tell, runs fine on a Quadra).

Subject: Print Spoolers

Hi. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of a print spooler/
print queue manager that would have features such as the ability to:

a) capture (spool) print directed to it, and
b) hold all such print files in a print queue until released by an 'operator'

It would also be nice if the print could be directed to various printers
under operator control, in other words, users select and print to a single
printer entity, the print file is captured by the spooler, and then may
optionally be directed to any number of printers by the operator.

I confess that I have only looked at the Apple Print Spooler that comes
with the AppleShare File Server software. This software falls short
however, in the area of print spool/queue management. The entire queue
may be held for instance, or the entire queue may be released. I would
like to see (at least) the ability to hold, or to release, single individual
print 'jobs'. Also, and I admit that this might be very difficult to do,
there is not the capability of redirecting captured print output to any
one of several printers that are under the print spoolers control.
I probably haven't explained myself all that well, but you get the idea.
Anyone doing/using this sort of software? Thanks for your help.

One of their tech support people told me that they also can receive email at:

Why have I been talking to them? I just purchased a SupraFAXmodem V.32bis

backorder
queue and get it to me, may be in stock now). Nice unit, except:
1) I can't get it to connect to any fax machine.
2) It works OK when talking to a V.32 USR dual standard modem (i.e., 9600b)
but behaves very badly when attempting to connect to a V.32bis USR (i.e.,
14,400b)
3) If it ever goes into retraining mode (as shown by "RE" in the very nice
status display) it never seems to recover and eventually drops the
connection.

The tech support person said the a "new ROM" would be distributed to all
registered owners by mid-summer to improve the retraining behavior (3). He
also offered to send me an exchange unit to fix problems (1) and (2) -- I get
the exchange unit, use the packaging to return mine, no charge to my credit
card or shipping charges (unless I don't return the original unit!). Seems
very civil -- but I haven't received the exchange unit yet, which was promised
by overnight delivery last week.

Hello!

I have tried downloading a couple of programs to run under fabulous System
7, but 2 of the programs come up with "Sorry, a System Error has occurred"
"unimplemented trap" messages.

I admit, not everything should run under System 7, but the two programs I
am having trouble with seem like they should work.

They are:
/info-mac/util/alias-zoo-14.hqx
and (previously)
/info-mac/game/blockade-091.hqx (or something similar).

I have emailed the author of blockade.91, and he claims it should work under
system 7. I couldn't find an email address for the author of alias-zoo-14,
but I *know* it should work under System 7, for obvious reasons.

I have tried this on a PowerBook 100 running system 7 with the Sys 7 tuner
1.1.1 and no extensions (shift key on startup) and have also tried it on a
lowly SE with unknown System 7 patches, but zero non-Apple extensions.

The PowerBook 100 has a 6MB expansion chip, but I don't think it would cause
the problems I'm seeing here, and it doesn't explain why the SE dies. They
are both running 68000's, so maybe that's it.

Anyone?

Firstly, I am writing an application which allows me to drag and drop

names. I am using the Dragonsmith object system by Paul M. Hoffman to
do this. My problem is that I can't get the finder to update the file
names once the program is run - the only way is to shut the window and
open it again. I had hoped that FlushVol would have done the trick...

for (fss = *docs; numDocs--; fss++) {
SwapName(fss->name, swappedName);
err = FSpRename(fss, swappedName);
err = FlushVol(nil, fss->vRefNum);
}

Secondly I am writing a program which converts between many chemical
modelling file formats and I wish to place icons within the data files
themselves since the program will generate many of type TEXT and with
me as the creator. "Programming for System 7" by Little and Swihart
(a great book) say that placing an icon of id -16455 in the file
should do the trick but I get just the normal icon (yes I have rebuilt
the desktop too.

Any suggestions???

I should be interested in hearing whether anyone else is having

I suspect a difficulty with Fractional Widths and TrueType, but the

talked with people at S M today inquiring about an upgrade from my
current version 1.04. They told me I could upgrade to 2.02 for $39 plus

included a new manual. Wish I could have gotten it free!

I just installed an Fkey called HotKey available from Smith Micro that
allows you to toggle the Disable/Enable Fax Manager off and on using
shift-command-8. It works from any application. I'm a real novice with

It really works slick and sure beats going into Quick Link each time
you want to Disable/Enable fax receive (which, BTW, interferes with
other communication software when it is enabled to receive faxes).
