In my correspondences with Dennis Nordman, designer of Scared Stiff, he
brought up some interesting facts about it's making. Let me know what you
think.

And again, thanks Dennis, for the info and for your permission to pass it
along!

"One feature that never made it past the whitewood stage was a mini playfield
located to the upper right of the main playfield. You can see that the Bony
Beast ramp was designed to fit around it. There was a shot to capture the
ball under the mini playfield. A floating eyeball (from DM) would pop out
onto the mini playfield float through some posts and switches and disappear,
magically turning back into a steel ball! Cost too much and used too much
space."

"Paint washing all your parts is a great idea. That's how they were supposed
to be done. Also the Bony Beast, ribs, return lane covers, claw flasher
holders, and flippers were supposed to be glow-in-the-dark plastic. It looks
really great with all the room lights off. Our vendor said no problem for the
washing and glowing, until it was time for production, then the cost went up!"

"The candles used to have GI lights behind the flame. You could put some
yellow acetate plastic behind the flames with some foil behind that. It
would look better than black flames! I also wanted the Bony Beast skull to
have red transparent acetate in his eye openings. You could use hot glue to
attach some from behind. Looks way cooler than the red condom lights!"

"At one time the leapers were going to say "El" "Vi" "Ra" when hit. Doing it
in sequence would award a bonus. We were afraid of problems with Budweiser."

"The video tapes next to Elvira;
Black Thursday refers to the day everyone was laid off.
Corn Men from Mars was Pat McMahan's name for the Martians that Doug Watson
designed for AFM. Pat thought they looked like they had corn in their bodies!
Curse of the Zombie Cows was just more cow stuff."

"In the Deadheads, Bad Head is actually Steve Ritchie, as drawn by Pat
McMahan. He was always doing funny sketches of people that worked there."

"There used to a spotlight (like the one by the coffin) that shined on the
skull pile. It was located on the right side of the game between the upper
and lower jets. Makes the skulls look better."

"During development I glued a rubber snake to the moving jet bumper caps. I
couldn't figure a good way to do it in production."

"Saw all the interest in rgp concerning eyeball shooters. Here's what I
REALLY wanted to do. I carved out the front of a regular plastic shooter
handle to the same diameter as the rolling eyeball from DM. These should
still be available at novelty stores. WMS may still have some too. Then I
used hot glue to attach the eyeball to the end of the shooter. It was really
fun to see the eyeball bounce around and always end looking up. Epoxy would
be a more permanent attachment. There! A designer approved modification!"

Hope you found this as interesting as I did.

Robert
