So I got a friendly letter from my ISP yesterday, going into a long
diatribe about acceptable use of Usenet, making sure postings are on-
topic, following the newsgroup charter, etc, etc. for a recent posting I
made about a unique Atari 2600 item I'm auctioning.

Now as I'm sure everyone is aware, the offical charters for these
newsgroups do say that forsale/auction cross-posting into the regular
rec.games.video.* groups is discouraged... however, the general feeling
amongst the regular members of the newsgroup has always been if
something unique and relevant was being offered, it wasn't a problem to
post information about it. Am I mistaken in that assumption? Are there
a majority of people on these groups that would prefer to stick to the
letter of the law?

This is the third time some mysterious person has reported me to the net
cops, and if someone has an issue, I would prefer that it be addressed
with me directly, rather than covertly under the guise of "reducing
newsgroup noise". Not only that, but next time, the person in question
should report the abuse to the correct ISP; that is what the NNTP
headers are for after all :)

Comments anyone?

My feelings are:
1. Larry, you're a class A guy, and a welcomed poster on RGVC.
2. One of the best eBay experiences I've had to date was an auction
of yours that I probably WOULDN'T have found if you didn't post it.
3. The stuff you auction is definitely 'vintage' or 'classic' IMHO.

For all three reasons, I think if you post an auction it should be
on topic. I understand how people bitch when you crosspost, but what
are they really gonna do? Netcopping these days is pointless; and if
the charter was written before 1996 it didn't really take into account
the valuable resource online auctioning was going to become to the
retro-gaming scene. Some people might say "rules are rules" but I say
that newsgroups don't exist in a vacumn and they're meant to evolve.
There's a difference between occasionally posting an auction for a
classic game and spamming the newsgroup everytime you sell something
anyway, and you obviously know the difference (as do most sellers who
would actually put RGVC in the groups line).

The charter (excellently rewritten by Mr Voight) does in fact allow auction
and for sale postings but states that they should only consist of one
header, and not 2 or more (sppaaacewalk).

So if any fool attempts to hassle any posters of FS/FA that have posted
their auctions with only one header, then you can direct your ISP to the
charter.

I know Mr Voight has posted the charter in here a few times, but does anyone
know the charter's permanent home?

I'd love to see this one reposted within the group. I've attempted several
times before to find the RGVC charter, and couldn't find a copy anywhere,
although I've occasionally found quotes from it.

That said, an overall "discouragement" of auction posts in the RGV* hierarchy
isn't the same as a complete ban. I mean, hell, newsgroup auctions used to be
a *staple* of the group.

I didn't re-write it; I just put out what was the commonly ascribed to
ettiquette. Not allowing FA: posts in RGVC would be ludicrous, but at least
make it so that those that don't want to read them can filter them, hence the
request of FA: or FA/ instead of just 'FA' lets filter's keep up on Pit'fa'll
discussion. :) ...And don't just put the items in the subject header; _Please_
use the FA: or FA/.

Geez, now I'm starting to sound like a Self-Appointed NG Cop... X6
Sorry 'bout that.

Thanks for everyone's feedback... I also went searching for a copy of
the actualy charter, and had to go several layers down on faqs.org to
find a reference to the original RFC for the newsgroup split. Not a
whole lot there except for references to netiqutte (i.e. no hard and
fast rules). In the future (and I do intend to continue posting these
items when I feel they're relavent), I'll be sure to follow the
conventions Geoff talked about so that everyone's newsgroup filters will
work accordingly.

I would also like to reiterate the following to the anonymous tipster
that reported me... part of any productive group is that when a member
has issues, he/she brings those issues up publicly and they are
discussed, and eventually resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Running
home and telling mommy and daddy only pisses people off. Not only that,
but I would like to think that at the end of the day, the majority of us
are just looking to trade games, not make a buck :)
