Hello All

I am running XP Pro and I had Messanger 4.7 before I
upgraded to 5.0 just yesterday but now whenever I go into
outlook express 6.0 it opens messanger 4.7 and tries to
sign in .

Can i get 4.7 removed and get outlook to run under 5.0

thanx

Shaun

Greetings Shaun,

Removing 4.7 really isn't a good idea -- its required for remote assistance, whiteboard,
application sharing and other applications. Instead, just add this registry key to stop
Messenger from loading with Outlook Express.

Just open
the registry (Click start, then Run, enter regedit.exe and click OK) and go to the key (looks
like a folder), HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Click the Edit menu,
and select New, then DWORD. Name the new DWORD 'Hide Messenger' (no quotes) and then double
click on it and enter '2' as the value (without quotes). Then click OK, exit out of the
registry editor and load Outlook Express.

Jonathan,

I think you are missing what he is saying. I am having the same
problem and it appears to be a bug with MSN 4.7 / 5.0 when you
upgrade. 5.0 doesn't seem to be replacing 4.7 and when you start up
outlook 4.7 messanger loads up (for me 5.0 is already running prior to
this - therefore I have 2 different versions of the program running).

Can you uninstall 4.7 without affecting 5.0 ? And if not, can you
uninstall 4.7 even it affects 5.0 then reinstall 5.0 ?

Hi,

This isn't a bug, they're too separate applications. You aren't using MSN Messenger 4.7,
you're using Windows Messenger 4.7, and you've installed MSN Messenger 5.0 -- two complete
separate applications. Obviously they sound similar with different version numbers, but so
does Windows 95 and Windows 2000.

Windows Messenger is the Messenger integrated into Windows XP, and as such, when applications
(like Outlook, Hotmail, and a number of other applications) load Messenger or access
Messenger features, they access Windows Messenger -- not MSN Messenger. You can uninstall
Windows Messenger, but Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing, and some
applications that rely on Messenger being there may "freeze" as they try to access Windows
Messenger. You can do so by closing down Windows Messenger (right click the messenger icon
in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK. Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and
screenshots, go to,

Keep in mind that even reinstalling 5.0 after Windows Messenger is gone will not "correct"
any of this, all of it is by design.
