I have a P4 1.9 machine that is lovely in every way, except that my mouse is
kinda cheap. The mouse "wheel" sticks between clicks, and it doesn't feel up
to snuff for an otherwise nice machine. Does anyone have any really strong
preferences one way or another for an aftermarket mouse? Corded/cordless is
not a big factor for me. Thanks in advance, Brendan

logitech or MS are great: get the optical (no dirt probs anymore)

my personal preference is the MS Trackball Optical: you do not need to move
the device around! And i have 5 programable buttons.

I use the MS Explorer 3.0 optical. 5 buttons and fits the hand nicely.

Logitech Wingman Gaming Mouse.

Its the 3 button gray one a little big, just the right weight. No wheel, but
then again we use it for shooters and the wheel isn't a necessity. It is
also out of production and hard to find.
The real life friends I have that are gamers all use this mouse and we all
swear by it if you are looking for a very accurate mouse that just "feels"
right in the hand.

If you are less of a perfectionist than any of the crap thats out there over
40 bucks should do just fine, just don't expect to win any tournaments. ;-)

I just went through this.

My old mouse is a Logitech Cordless Mouseman. Ergonomically and in terms
of build quality, it's great. However, 50Hz mouse updates translates
into kinda jerky first-person shooters. I can't really recommend it for
action games, though it works fine for strategy games and general
mousework. Battery life was measured in months, but this is a ball
mouse, not an optical. Mouseware sucks in Windows 2000 (jerky scrolling
in IE/Explorer), but Intellipoint works reasonably well with Logitech
PS/2 mice...the fourth button and wheel button just map together. More
on that in a second.

So, a week ago, I decided that I was OK with sacrificing cordless for
better gaming and I bought what seemed to be the top of the market, the
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer. I mean, hey, I was already using
Intellipoint, right, and it had five buttons plus a wheel. The problem
is that the mouse is shaped for people with narrow palms and long
fingers, and my hand is precisely the opposite. With my fingertips
anywhere near the wheel, my thumb couldn't reach the auxillary buttons.
The mouse hump was also too high and the mouse buttons were
hypersensitive, which made it difficult to pick up and reposition.
Most damningly, the mouse just felt cheap...the buttons and wheel were
kind of loose, and the whole thing would flex if you applied any
pressure. Back to the store it went.

Finally (almost), I decided to stick to old standards; I picked up a
Logitech Dual Optical. More accurately, I picked up a Logitech Dual
Optical three times. The first two had slightly loose right buttons.
Having found a solid one, though, I'm ecstatic. It tracks wonderfully
(too wonderfully, actually...I'm having to get used to lifting the mouse
a bit high in shooters so that repositioning doesn't spin me around),
feels rock solid, and just screams quality. The buttons have a
reasonable threshold so that you can rest your fingers on them without
activating them, and the wheel is nice and tight, but not notchy. Best
of all, turns out that the USB Mouseman works perfectly with
Intellipoint, with with it conforming to the HID specification. You just
tell W2K that you're using an IM Explorer instead, and Intellipoint will
map all of the buttons separately.

Good luck with your search. Buy from somewhere where you can return, and
don't be afraid to do so. You'll be using your mouse more than you'll be
driving your car...there's no reason why it shouldn't be perfect.

If you can find one, get a Logitech Mouseman 3 button (no wheel)

perfectly and is smooth. They stopped making them a couple of years
ago so it might be hard to get, but you will be happy with it if you
get one. I have the one I use, and a spare tucked away for the
future. :-)

What??? the wheel is PERFECT for use as a weapon change or changing the
level of zoom.

I have 2 logitech, one a trackball the other a standard. Both are optical
with wheel. Mainly use the trackball for the laptop (i.e. strategy games
where excessive movement is not required) But the standard optical wheel
mouse works great. Only problem is you just have to terminate logitech
driver accessory program prior to playing most games to ensure
compatibility.

It sucks for swapping weapons. Those precious moments you waste trying to
select the right weapon from the list are the same few moments that your
opponent presses a single button to instantly weild the correct weapon to
frag your sorry ass.

Man, I have one of those and I upgraded to the iFeel Logitech mouse because
I needed a free IRQ and it could work USB and I liked the idea of force-
feedback mousing. The FF is a joke, the feel is okay, but it's just not
quite as comfortable as the old one. <sigh>
