Lo all,

First off, whilst this is slightly off topic - it is a warning for anyone
using Morpheus to be careful (ie, for the CS file downloads)

I downloaded what I needed for CS via Morpheus - with no visible problems...

I also had a quick search for some other stuff, *coughs* videos *coughs* -
erm....anyway...in between going blind, I also downloaded a couple of Tetris
games....later on during the evening I got a dialogue box on the screen
telling me the Outlook Express had caused errors etc and would be
closed....anyway...I wasnt overly worried, as this type of thing happens
from time to time...

This morning I booted up, and found that NOTHING would work...I was double
clicking like mad on stuff to get an error telling me it couldnt find the
..... etc etc..

I eventually, after lots of work and wasted time, found a way to run the
Norton Anti Virus thingy bob on the puter, it found 6 infected files, and 2
virus' .. seven22 and seven something etc...some kinda trojan that gives out
lots of stuff, and feks computers nicely..like mine...

If I had had the 'online protection' thing enabled via NAV I'd have probably
been ok - but I didnt as it inteferes with my ping whilst online...

If anyone else tried the tetris games, I suggest you SCAN right now - before
things go bad...and I appologise to anyone who gets any problems from the
games I mentioned in the other posting - although you may have got them from
other users and be ok...but please check!..

I have spent the day wiping my C drive and reinstalling stuff - and still
have lots to go - whilst I managed to save my older emails, and folder
structure for my email account, I didnt manage to retrieve my address book
stuff, so I've lost lots of emails, if I know you, please drop me a line -
see my email via this group and remove the obvious for my address etc...

Anyway...I just thought I'd post this info as it may concern anyone else
using any peer to peer stuff - whilst I still plan to use Morpheus (even if
a little more carefully) - I will not be downloading any more .exe's unless
I think they look safe - and I'll also be using this online protection
thing....

Once again soz to anyone else who may have been affected due to my
posting...it was certainly NOT intentional :(

Best regards

For MP3's I still find Audio Galaxy to be rather neat....havent tried
Morpheus for it - I do like the way that Audio Galaxy sorts the files into
artist/name for the filenames etc - you know where you are then.. :)

Swine, I V-scanned my PC today cos my brothers PC was infected by the Nimda
virus.

He plugged my Grandad's PC into his network cos it was ill, but the silly
sod logged in as Admin and more or less gave the infected PC cart-blanche to
do what it wanted.
5 minutes later Norton lit up like a Christmas tree, in the 5 minutes before
Norton went mad, it had spread across his network (posh name for 5 PC's ;)
on his games PC alone, it had copied itself into every directory on his
HD's, thats over 2000 copies !
The only PC that didn't get "twatted" was his wifes (cos he doesn't have
total admin rights for it, he has to use a password).
Mucho "fun" was had ;)

Anyway, back to business.
My PC was clean as a whistle, until....... ;) Robb posted about a cool
Tetris game, which I downloaded and tried out.

Hehe, you guessed yet ? Yup, thats right, just scanned again and theres 2
trojans on here, never mind PC-Cillin caught and killed 'em ;)
Thanks for the warning Robb, I wouldn't have even thought about it if you
hadn't posted, ta :)

I don't even think about Virii anymore cos I'm so used to Norton catching
anything. WinXP doesn't like Norton though so I@ve been running "sans AV"
silly billy that I am. Nevermind, fixed now :)

Lo :)

You are more than welcome about the warning - just sorry I couldnt get it
posted sooner - as I said it was all seemingly ok last night - but went
rapidly down hill today...

I use Norton and do scan quite often - but like I mentioned I dont allow it
to do its 'Real Time File Protection' - do you? Or rather did you? I have
noticed that the net in general seems slower when its activated - which is
bad enough when just 'browsing' - but increasingly worse when you try to
play online (CS or otherwise)...

Sorry once again for the whole incident - feeling a bit bad about it
really - as there are quite a few of us in here who get on well and kinda
'trust' each other when its comes to the 'hey - go get this its great' type
of posts - things like Bridge Builder and alike - all good stuff :)

Whats more annoying is that I didnt know which one of the downloads was the
bad one...I had one very basic Tetris game - the Adult one - and then
something else called Jovadal (I think) - I think it was the last one that
fekked up - as when it was run it didnt seem to start anything or do
anything - so the games may have been ok - not sure though - but that -
apart from the *coughs* videos *coughs* were the only things I got last
night (they were goodie vid's too! :D - all gone now though :( - ah well -
have to use my imagination or something...hehe)..

Best regards

Robb m8,

Don't feel bad. I know that's easy for me to say cos I'm virus free, but
trust me. No matter how careful you think you can be, something will nearly
always slip through at some stage.

I remember one time I went looking for a warez copy of Paint Shop Pro
(Please, don't tell on me!). I thought I had found it and clicked on the
link. Bang! 40 pr0n windows all opened up simultaneously. I closed em all
down and thought nothing of it till I restarted my computer. A porn site
had set itself as my homepage, and no matter what I tried, i couldn't remove
it. Also every now and again Gozilla would fire up and try and download
"something" quite out of the blue. I would never let it as I was too
scared.

I asked a friend to go have a look at the site and it turned out that the
Paint Shop Pro link actually installed a Trojan in my system.

Guess what the program was that it wanted me to download?

An international pr0n dialler!

I nearly dropped. How could I have been so stupid? I swear to this day I
haven't went near another warez site, let that be a lesson to anyone
thinking of going.

None of the antivirus progs could get rid of it so I had to go into the
registry and hoke it out, bit by bit. Scary stuff! I finally got it
removed and my computer has remained virus free so far.

Robb, I now use PCCillen and it has some kind of "running in the background
while surfing" facility which doesn't seem to annoy my CS ping one little
bit. I was still pinging 150-190 tonight on my trusty 56 k :)

Head up m8. Keep smiling :)

Mappy

There's a reason people say "virus scan .exes you download before you run
them", you know.

For those of you that are wise enough to realise that Norton causes more
bloody problems than it's worth but still want a decent Virus checker, go
and get AVG.
It's free and doesn't totally mess around with everything like Norton does.
Also you get automatic updates and Emails of new viruses prior to either
McAffee ot Norton.

You won't notice it's there :o)

Robb, you really should be pinging 40-80 with no problems whatsoever.

If you are with BT, get shot of them and join Tiscali. Don't tell them you
are using ISDN or they will tell you they don't support it. Anyway, they
lie. They do support it (of course, it's just another dial up) and I know a
few people who are very happy with their pings on ISDN through Tiscali.

An unmetered service will cost you £14.99 per month. I used to be with them
on my ordinary dial up (1st Screaming Net, then Worldonline, then Tiscali)
and always found their dial up fast and reliable. Of course, their billing
sucked. I think it is better now though.

I used to ping 60-80 in AQ2, and about the same on CS before Freeserve
'forced' me to change my account type for this 'better' service - which has
actually increased my ping...also the new version of CS as we all know seems
to have boosted the pings as well...
