Hey all,

I have been doing meditation for three months and have had many strange
experiences. I'd like to find a forum to talk about them, but I am pretty
skeptical and a-religous, so I'd like to find a place with less dogma,
would-be messiahs, and use of "chakras" and "third eyes". Just honest people
sharing their experiences and trying to figure shit out. The type of person
who might have read and dug Lawrence LeShan's "How To Meditate."

A quick glance of the posts on this forum turns up a bunch of "do this and
you'll be saved" type answers, so I imagine this is not the place. Do any of
the more secular among you have ideas for internet spots that might have the
kind of discussion I'm looking for? Thanks all.

peace
Matt

Hi Funky Matt,

it's really nice to see someone else who appreciates a down-to-earth approach
to meditation.

From my experience, if you're looking for a good discussion on meditation, the
mailing lists are better than the newsgroups although, once hors de combat,
several
of the people on the NGs are pretty insightful. There's probably a host of
lurkers
too....who may just be enjoying the ringside seats ;o)

A few places you could try...

the "allspirit" list at onelist.com (or other lists there, but allspirit's my
fave ever
since "allwords", the poetry one, came to an end)

http://www.alanwatts.net

He was an excellent philosopher, and I get the impression that both his and
Dr LeShan's methods are highly compatible, although Alan Watts tends towards
the conceptualising angle on spirituality, and Dr LeShan tends more towards
practicalities.

I can also STRONGLY recommend the meditation tip of the day site at

http://www.deeshan.com

You know, it's kind of foxed me, really...I'd generally suggest "How to
Meditate" as
a good book for starters, but Ram Dass also wrote a pretty good one whose
title I forget...the journey of meditation or something like that.

If you want to get in touch, you can e-mail me at

dtho...@dthomson.eurobell.co.uk

and I could send you the relevant chunk of my (Netscape 4.6) bookmarks file,
although, as I haven't done meditation practice for a while, they may be a bit
out
of date.

Finally, I wholeheartedly applaud your scepticism about bright lights et al.
I mean, if that's what happens in your meditation, well cool, but to talk about
it before it happens lacks authenticity at the very least.

Y'know, Evelyn Underhill described mystics as "the Ultimate Empiricists"
...I'm starting to see why!

Best wishes

Doug
