Now that I've been running WinMe for almost 2 months without any
problems, I'd like to upgrade my hard drive. I'm looking at a 30GB
drive (7200 rpm) but not sure if I should get a Maxtor, IBM, or Western
Digital. Any recommendations, and should I get an ATA-66 or ATA-100.
Thanks,
Joe

I myself like Maxtor. Go with the 7200 rpm, get ata-100. newest technology
and better speed.

I've run Maxtor and IBM drives all with no problems. The drive I use now is
a IBM ATA100 7200RPM. It is super fast on my HPT370 ATA100 Controller and
also very quiet. You cannot even here it running.

I think the key here is to stay away from Western Digital. Maxtor and
Quantum are joining together, (maxtor bought them) and the 2 technologies
together are unbeatable

I've upgraded to an older, 13.6 GB, 5400 r.p.m., Western Digital (strictly
because of the money factor at X-mass time) and have had no problems. It's
running great. (It surely is not the quietest hard drive though.)

I think that is one thing that I have found from using Western Digital in
the past. Thats why I tend to shy away from them now. I've had a few crash
on me and their support was shitty.
Maxtor also has a new program to control the noise on your hard drive. You
can set it to three differnet settings that dont effect the speed of the
drive. Check it out on www.maxtor.com .

I like the Maxtor, I've always had problems with Western Digital drives
getting bad sectors. I've had to return 2 WD drives within 3 months of
purchase because they died on me.

I have used Maxtor HDDs in most all of my machines as well as others I've
built for other people. Just installed a Maxtor 30GB ATA 100 7200 rpm in my
machine and if your motherboard can handle the ATA 100 go that route. They
are very fast drives. And their support is excellent. In 7 years have only
had to return one drive and a replacement was sent out immediately and with
no squabbles.

Oh ... I forgot this story when we started the discussion. It's a bit
off-topic (it DOES deal with Maxtor tech support though) so if that bothers
you then move on to the next message. :-)

A couple years ago I was bench-testing a machine that refused to boot.
Among the components was a Maxtor 540mb drive. The customer stated that the
machine would POST just fine, but then would repeat a series of beep codes
and never complete the POST.

So, I tore it down to components on my bench and noted that he was right -
the memory count was running OK but before we got to the hard drive check
the system would make a funny "beep-beep-beep-beep", wait about ten seconds,
then do it again, and so on. I had just about decided it was a motherboard
problem when I realized that the one component I hadn't connected was the
motherboard speaker. So here I am, with a system that should be incapable
of beeping ... but it was.

After a bit of stethoscope work, I determined that it was the Maxtor making
the noise. So I called Maxtor tech support and asked why one of their hard
drives would beep. The first tech I got escalated my call to a Level 2 tech
just because he thought I was pulling his leg. The Level 2 tech politely
listened, then brought an engineer on the line to hear the complaint. Both
of them were, frankly, amazed when I put the phone up against the drive and
let them hear it beep.

The engineer asked if I was willing to try a non-warranty repair on the
drive and I said yes ... so he advised me to disconnect the drive, turn it
upside down, smack it firmly on the bench, then turn it back over and
re-connect it.

Lo and behold ... it worked! The problem was that the drive was old and
much of the lubricating fluid was gone, so the drive couldn't spin up to
full speed. That's what the "beep" was - the drive spinning up, then the
motor cutting out because it couldn't reach full RPMs. The "whack" got the
drive running long enough to copy the essential data off it before it failed
again.

A couple weeks later, Maxtor sent me a new drive ... and a copy of an
article from their in-house tech support bulletin with the story of the
beeping hard drive. :-)

The decision has been made. I went to CDW this morning and picked up a
Maxtor 20.4GB 7200 ATA/100 drive and the Promise Ultra ATA/100
controller. I'm up and running and definitely notice a speed
improvement; and the drive is very quiet too. Thanks for all your
comments.
