XXXXXXXXX DRUDGE SUMMER STORY XXXXXXXXXXXX JUNE 22, 1995 XXXX

BROAD BEACH, DO THEY PUT DREAM POTION IN THE WATER THERE?

I had a very nice time stretched out on Broad Beach today, a miracle of a
beach, just north of Malibu, California. The Pacific Ocean is so large and
violent and the cars dotting back and forth on the Pacific Coast Highway
seem so silly and meaningless. I started to think (again) about the
upcoming WATERWORLD. Recently, I attended a few scoring sessions for the
new epic, the music is perfect- congrats to James Newton Howard. The scenes
I viewed, have stayed with me, haunted me and have activated my mind. This
is a big film, the biggest if you are measuring it buy the numbers. But, we
get tired of endless numbers and that awful market research. *Flashback to
the horrors Warren Beatty went through with his researched-out DICK TRACY.
Ever single frame of TRACY was said to be market tested. That is every
frame! Costner was headed in that direction, we are told, but has been
rescued by some friends who has seen the magic in WATERWORLD. And what
magic it is! For days I have been wondering about the future of the human
race, the end-game, and if the WATER premise could actually be realized.
While watching parts of the movie, I had a feeling of deep appreciation of
all that I do have, all that is solid. I like my ground, my ninth floor
apartment in Hollywood, and the trees and animals that surround me.

UNIVERSAL thought big! You foolish MCA accountants. Yes you! You have
been leaking, to your media whore friends, the play-by-play of the
expensive WATERWORLD. You have tried to contaminate the vision, and you may
have succeeded. So what, if APOLLO XIII makes *the* money and then WATER
goes and looses it. And so what, if the media pigs in New York (FRANK
RICH) and elsewhere get wrapped up in the 'money-mess' and forget to dream
about what might happen to us. I Thank you, Costner, for dreaming big and
showing me- just the simplicity of the ground I walk on should not go
unnoticed.

At the beach, I was thinking about Hollywood, what a roll it is on. How
they are making great films again. The upcoming CROSSING GUARD is another
tremendous one. Sean Penn will be vaulted into the A group, after this
triumph opens. A story of a man who is bent on killing a convict for
revenge, changes his heart when the man is released in emotional shambles.
Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston are poetry on film. The story is very
pro Judeo-Christian. In Hollywood, 1995 will go down as the year the great
ones were released. Don't laugh! This *is* what is happening out here.
You are behind the curve if you feel Hollywood is only making mindless smut
that stunts and twists human potential. They are also spinning tales of
faith and love. From BRIDGES, which shows the emptiness of not living you
heart, to WATER, to GUARD, to BRAVE, what a time it is for great
storytelling in Hollywood. I have been looking at the films in
pre-production and I can tell you, this great phase just may continue
beyond '95, but more on that later. I am content to stay in the moment and
appreciate this current crop of films. The sunburn I received today- is a
bear. I have a few calls place to the National Weather Service! No doubt,
there *is* something wrong with the intensity of the sunrays pounding North
America.
