619 MALE LACTATION
I am a 38 year old male. During puberty I suffered
from Gynecomastia. My breasts have been somewhat
senstive ever since. About 10 year ago with the
birth of my first daughter I noticed a swelling of
my breasts. I also noticed a very small amount of
fluid secretion from my breasts.

COMMENT BY EDWARD J. MATHES, RPA-C (PHYS ASST)

Prolactin is a pituitary hormone that 'regulates'
lactation. Small tumors of the pituitary gland can
cause a rise in serum prolactin levels,
gynecomastia and lactation in men. Do you have
headaches or visual
disturbances? How about loss of libedo? Many
medications are also
associated with high prolactin levels....methyldopa
and other
antihypertensives, phenothyazines, certain anabolic
steroids, etc.

It is important that you see your health care
provider and have this
evaluated a bit further.
