Just what makes Madonna Madonna?

OK people, we're fed up of you USA guys hogging all the limelight
on this group, so lets see some fellow UK people getting in on the
act, OK?

Anyway, I was deliberating as to what actually makes Madonna herself?
No puns about gene structure, DNA, body tissue please; serious
answers only...

Is it the way she manipulates the media to her own gain, and surrounds
herself in huge amounts of hype? Would she be the same artist if
she hadn't _used_ the media so much? My guess is that she _would_ be
the same - perhaps her music would be more appreciated than it currently
is; it seems to me that a lot of people only appreciate her for the way in
which she flaunts her breasts at alarming regularity! I can't think of
another musician/movie star/personality who has wrangled the world's
media so much in recent memory, perhaps save Greta Garbo, who, in
complete opposition to Madonna, wrapped herself in great mystery so she
appeared as an 'enigma' to her adoring fans.

Well, that's just a taster of my view. Let's here some more.

Keep striking that pose...

OK, you asked for it!

No - I think that it's exactly because of the way she contols media
exposure (as well as exposure of herself) that makes her what she is. It's
that same control over her finances that has built up quite a sizable
financial mini-empire.

But... someone who uses the media so much to promote a certain view of
themselves, just like Madonna does, can be just as much a mystery. How
much do we really know about her? After seeing "In bed with Madonna" I
still don't have a clue what she is like in private!

Excuse ME! I was just in the middle of writing some lengthy prose on
my feelings on Maddy's success, when I get called a Lurker...

And this from a poet with black spiky hair (mid-80's reference), who
probably drinks in the Courtyard.

Ahem... I think I've lost my thread now. I'll just have to be
provocative and say that our favourite minx stole vogueing from
Talcy Malc McLaren, who had previously nicked it from the gay/TV
clubs of New York. Doesn't make her record any the less adorable, though.

I think that's her charm, that she can be quite blatant about ripping
off ideas, because she adds so much to the original idea. OK, so Len
Kravitz co-wrote (?) 'Justify My Love', but who else could have
made it ooze from my tinny radio speakers?

k.

You did indeed. But who am I to waste a perfectly good phrase? :-)

Care to explain the previous two lines? I'm perplexed!

A certain vixen who goes by Ingrid Chavez, that's who. Our dear lady
Madonna has stolen from more than one person, you know. (There was a whole
controversy about Ingrid being the person who co-wrote JML, and I tend to
believe her -- listen to her album, and u'll see that Madge is far from
being original).

Joolz was (is) a spiky-haired poet who formed hung around with New
Model Army during the mid-80's. She was very good, too.. The
Courtyard *used* to be a fine pub in Coventry called the Rose & Crown
where the more esoteric and colourful people used to hange out. Oh, and
Japan were a band of such beauty and lovely music that I'm in danger of
losing my thread.

Now, what was that about Ingrid Chavez. Ah, I think that was...over..
..here....

Oooh! Tell me more, name, label, etc. If this lady is a funky diva, I
need her in my life (& record collection).

Progress Report : I now have half of the steps to Deeper & Deeper committed
to memory.

Ingrid Chavez records on Paiseley Park (they produced her album), and the
album is self titled. Indeed, she's a fonky diva.

(p/s the D&D steps look awfully much like the Electric Slide to me)
