Thanks,

I have had this problem with my Gainward Golden Sample GF3. I think the card
defaults to the analog VGA connector, even when there's nothing connected to
it. I've heard on the Net that I'm not the only one. I don't think it's a
documented problem, at least I didn't see it documented anywhere. I tried
emailing Gainward and Hercules Tech Support, but they never responded. I've
tried several different driver revisions and fiddled with some undocumented
registry settings using RivaTuner and it helps a little, but doesn't fix it.
One workaround is to repeatedly sleep and wake the PC until the DVI signal
is turned on. This is incredibly annoying and unacceptable on such an
expensive card.
I've lost hope of this getting fixed in a driver update, so I'll get a
Radeon 8500DV when that's released. It only has DVI out (you need a
DVI-to-VGA adaptor if your monitor can only accept an analog signal), so I
know it'll work correctly. Unfortunately, their current drivers are flaky,
so I'm just waiting for ATI to fix their drivers.
If anybody can tell me how to fix this annoying problem with the GF3, then
I'd be happy to keep it. It's actually a nice and fast, stable card. But
this problem makes it unusable...
Good luck,
E@
