Is there a documented problem with GF3 Ti 500 cards and the digital out
DVI-I to a digital LCD monitor. I'm using the VisionTek card and am unable
to get the card to display a digital signal to my monitor. When using the
ATI Radeon 8500, the digital signal comes through on my flat panel. Is it a
design issue/flaw in the GF3 reference board or a driver issue?

Do you get a signal when you switch your PC on? I do, but I lose the signal
when WinXP boots and switches into the login screen mode. Same think also
happens with Linux when X starts up.

I have had this problem with my Gainward Golden Sample GF3. I think the card
defaults to the analog VGA connector, even when there's nothing connected to
it. I've heard on the Net that I'm not the only one. I don't think it's a
documented problem, at least I didn't see it documented anywhere. I tried
emailing Gainward and Hercules Tech Support, but they never responded. I've
tried several different driver revisions and fiddled with some undocumented
registry settings using RivaTuner and it helps a little, but doesn't fix it.

One workaround is to repeatedly sleep and wake the PC until the DVI signal
is turned on. This is incredibly annoying and unacceptable on such an
expensive card.

I've lost hope of this getting fixed in a driver update, so I'll get a
Radeon 8500DV when that's released. It only has DVI out (you need a
DVI-to-VGA adaptor if your monitor can only accept an analog signal), so I
know it'll work correctly. Unfortunately, their current drivers are flaky,
so I'm just waiting for ATI to fix their drivers.

If anybody can tell me how to fix this annoying problem with the GF3, then
I'd be happy to keep it. It's actually a nice and fast, stable card. But
this problem makes it unusable...

Good luck,

E@

Eren,
I'm using an ATI 8500 and the DVI output is excellent. You are correct tho,
the drivers are not great. So it's either analog GF3 Ti500 or DVI-I Radeon
8500. I'm bummed.

I think you may just be unlucky in having a duff card, cos I'm running a
Herc GF3 on a Compaq Presario FP700 montior that requires a DVI to DFP
(older flat panel standard) convertor & it works great.

Cheers

Mark
