os: winME
printer: lexmark Z53 (networked)

On completely random ocations when I reboot, this program causes hardcore
crashing. Running the uninstall for, the Z53 doesn't get rid of it. If i
delete it from \windows\system it seems to make another copy of it to
\windows\system when I reboot. I did find that it seems to be recreating the
copy on boot from \LXKZ53. I renamed this directory and my machine has
worked happily for about a week, even after reinstalling the lexmark.
However, windows seems to have found lexpps.exe sometime over the weekend.
does anyone know of a way to get windows to stop finding/running lexpps.exe?
it doesn't seem to do anything besides listen to a network port.

unfortunatly, i've already been to these pages (they are a help and a half!)
If i do disable it, another copy is made in the registry.

In that case you may have a 'wininit' problem.
Check in your Windows directory for a file wininit.ini - if it exists rename
it wininit.xxx then disable the lexpps in msconfig, and reboot

Many people are having probs with Lexmark software. There are
stability probs as well as privacy/security issues. I found the
following suggestion last summer which solved probs on several
systems.

For lots more info about the spyware installed as part of Lexmark
software, do a search on Lexmark at grc.security.software.

Hope this helps ....
.................................................................
.....................
(copied from post to grc.security.software)
1. Make sure you have a good firewall program like Zone Alarm Pro

2. Go to lexmark's site and download the printer driver for your
Z series
inkjet. It is a self-extracting executable.......DO NOT run it!
SAve the
file in a temp dir.....like C:\temp-lex

3. open the file with winzip or powerarchiver........ extract all
files
to that temp dir. delete lexpps.ex_

4. now go to control panel and remove lexmark printer drivers
from your
system and reboot.

5. Windows will find new hardware when you reboot. Do not put
lexmark CD
in drive. Instead have windows go to that temp-lex dir you made
and
install from there.

6. During driver installation it will look for
lexpps.exe...........skip
file............it may ask for lexpps.bak...............skip file
and
proceed till done

7. before rebooting, use file find and check windows dir and
window\system dir............delete lexpps.bak if it's there or
lexpps.exe which should not be found.

8. when rebooting, check your firewall like ZA pro........If you
have
lexpps.exe as one of the programs listed as before........make
sure you
have always deny the connection when to the program attempts to
act as a
server to the internet zone.........and in ports........"allow
access
onlt to the ports below"..............check none"

1.Went to Lexmark website and downloaded the driver for my
printer (it's a
zipfile)
2. Used the uninstall utility in the current Lexmark folder to
remove all
Lexmark software.
3. Then open Winzip and open the Lexmark zip file from within
winzip (do not
use the self extracting method they provide) and unzip it to a
folder that
you create.
4. Open explorer, then the folder you created and then delete the
file:
lexpps.ex_
5. reboot, and at the plug and play window point it to the folder
you
created. During install it will ask you to insert disk one
because it can't
find the file lexpps.exe just hit "Skip File" and continue on.
.................................................................
.....................

Good luck. FWIW, I love the Lexmark printers I use. Just don't
appreciate the companie's bundling of spyware into their software
and refusal to provide a fix or even acknowledge the probs
caused. Since I started cleaning off ALL spyware/adware, my
systems are MUCH faster and more stable.

For further reference I seem to have fixed the problem..
couple of things tho.
1) Windows ME is a piece of @!#$!@#$, can't get to dos unless i make a
"boot disk" and use "minimal". Once i do that i can go in and remove all
things lexpps*. There was even one in \windows\temp!

2) I did a "registry hack" (btw this registry thing is also a piece of
@#$@!#$. i wonder why it has lasted this long) I found anything lexpps and
removed it.

have not seen it since... been 3 days maybe it will stay that way ;}
